Alarm Clocks, Adulting, and Anxiety: The 6am Scam

At 6:00 a.m., the betrayal Your alarm rings, You snooze, It rings once more. You negotiate with God. "Just 5 more minutes."

You're brushing your teeth with one hand and wearing your other shoe in the car before you know it's 6:47 in the morning. You are now adulting. Where every morning feels like a scam.

Nobody told us that being a grown-up would be 80% waking up tired and 20% pretending you have your life together.

The Morning Olympics

Adult mornings are a sport.

In addition, in "Chaos Management," we are all competing for gold.

Event 1: The Shower Sprint

3 minutes. Cold water as a result of NEPA. Eyes with soap. Running.

Event 2: The Outfit Dilemma, You have "nothing to wear" despite owning 20 outfits. You end up wearing black. Again. because sweat and regret are hidden in black.

Event 3: The Breakfast Negotiation

Bread and tea. garri, or Or nothing. because "I'll drink three cups of coffee and call it a meal" really means "I'll eat at work." By 8am you’ve already made 47 decisions and it’s not even work yet.

Why Mornings Feel Like War

1. Decision Fatigue: From "should I wear this" to "should I reply that email" your brain is tired before lunch.

2. In comparison, you look at someone's "5am routine: gym, smoothie, journaling" on Instagram. You: "5am routine: survive."

3. Financial Pressure: Transport fare went up. Data finished. That ₦500 note is looking at you like "spend me wisely."

3 Ways to Win the Morning Without Losing Your Mind

1. The "Lay Out Life" Method

The night before, select clothes, pack a bag, and fill a water bottle. Future you will send present-you a thank you text.

2. The Rule of Ten Minutes

Start your day 10 minutes earlier. Not for efficiency, For peace, Sit, Breathe, Drink water. Let your brain boot up before the world starts demanding things.

3. Laugh at It

You will forget your ID. You will spill coffee. You will reply "you too" when someone says "enjoy your meal." It's alright. Inform the group chat Laugh.

The Real Truth About Adulting

Adulting isn’t having everything figured out. It’s showing up even when you don’t.

It’s paying rent and still buying suya on Friday.

It’s being tired and still saying "I’m fine" with a smile.

Conclusion

The 6am alarm will always feel like a scam. But you are not a victim. You are the main character.

So tomorrow, snooze once. Not five times, Drink water, Wear the black. And go conquer.

Because the world needs your tired, funny, beautiful, adult self.

Adulting isn't about having perfect mornings at the end of the day. It all boils down to showing up.

You will continue to betray yourself at 6 a.m, bills will continue to arrive, and you will still leave the house unmatched on occasion.

That’s okay.

You are not in the way. You are building. Brick by tired brick.

Therefore, forgive yourself. Drink the water. Make your lunch. Laugh when you spill the coffee.

Because resilience resembles you in that it is worn out, determined, and willing to try. Tomorrow, wake up, wear the black, and walk into the world.

The world needs your effort, even on the messy days.
