THE PROMISE I MADE TO MY 15-YEAR-OLD SELF

I was 15 when life broke me the first time.

Dad lost his job. Mum started selling akara by the roadside.

NEPA was our neighbor. Hunger was our landlord.

That year, I wrote something in my jotter and hid it under my mattress.

“I promise you, girl. One day you will not beg. One day your table will be full. One day you will be the reason someone else smiles.”

Fast forward 10 years.

I was 25, working two jobs, still broke.

Morning I was a sales girl in a boutique. Evening I was doing customer service from home.

Pay was small. Transport was plenty. Hope was thinner.

And every month, I remembered that promise.

“One day you will not beg.”

But it felt like a lie I told a child.

The turning point came on a Wednesday.

I was on my way to work when I saw a girl by the bus stop. School uniform, torn bag, crying quietly.

She reminded me of me.

I didn’t have much. Just 2k for transport and food.

I gave her 1k. “Go home. Don’t cry in the street.”

She looked up and said, “Thank you aunty. God will bless you.”

That night I couldn’t sleep.

Because I realized something: I had been so focused on waiting for my “one day” that I forgot to be it for someone else.

The next morning I didn’t go to the boutique.

I resigned.

Everyone said I was mad. “How will you eat?”

I said, “I’ll eat from the promise.”

I took the last 30k in my account and started something small.

I was selling thrift bags on WhatsApp. Taking pictures in my room, using my phone torch as ring light.

First week: 0 sales.

Second week: 1 sale. 8k profit. I cried.

Third month: I was making 80k.

Sixth month: I hired the girl from the bus stop to help me pack orders.

It wasn’t magic. It was obedience.

Obedience to the 15-year-old who refused to die inside me.

Obedience to the voice that said, “Start with what you have.”

People started asking, “How did you blow?”

I didn’t blow. I grew. Slowly. Quietly.

I failed 3 times. I was scammed twice. I almost quit.

But every time I wanted to stop, I opened that old jotter.

The ink had faded, but the promise hadn’t.

Today I’m 28.

I have a small shop. 3 staff. I pay my mum’s rent.

Last week I paid school fees for 5 kids in my old church.

Not because I’m rich.

Because I remember what empty pockets feel like.

That 15-year-old girl didn’t know business.

She didn’t know marketing.

She just knew hope.

And hope, when you feed it, becomes a plan.

And a plan, when you work it, becomes provision.

So if you’re 15 and reading this: don’t let them laugh at your dream.

If you’re 25 and tired: don’t bury the promise because it’s taking long.

If you’re 40 and starting again: you’re not late. You’re right on time.

I made a promise to a child with no money and a big God.

And today, I’m keeping it.

One bag, one girl, one table at a time.

Because the future you prayed for

is waiting on the present you to move.
