Child of the deep

CHILD OF THE DEEP

Long before Amanda understood who she was, the river already knew her name.

It was a quiet evening in the village of Umuoma when an old woman named Granny was walking home from the market. As she passed the river, she heard the faint cry of a baby.

She followed the sound and stopped in shock.

There, beneath a large tree beside the river, was a newborn baby wrapped in a wet white cloth. Yet strangely, the baby was completely dry.

Granny looked around, but there was nobody nearby.

She carefully picked up the child and noticed a small necklace around her neck. At the center of the necklace was a beautiful blue stone that seemed to glow beneath the moonlight.

“Who left you here, little one?” Granny whispered.

The baby stopped crying and opened her eyes.

Granny felt something unusual about the child, but she could not explain what it was. She took the baby home and raised her as her own granddaughter.

She named her Amanda.

Amanda grew into a kind and beautiful young girl. She was loved by almost everyone in the village, especially her three closest friends, Emma, Samuel, and Peace. They did everything together.

But there was one strange thing about Amanda.

She had always been attracted to the river.

Whenever she stood near the water, she felt peaceful, as though she were returning to a place she had known forever. Sometimes, when the wind was quiet, she heard a woman's voice calling her name.

“Amanda…”

Whenever she turned around, nobody was there.

One afternoon, Amanda and her friends went to the river to play. While the others were talking, Amanda walked closer to the water.

Suddenly, everything became silent.

The birds stopped singing.

The wind disappeared.

Even the flowing river became strangely still.

Then Amanda heard the voice again.

“Amanda…”

She stared into the water and saw the reflection of a beautiful woman beneath the surface.

Amanda screamed and stepped backward.

Her friends ran toward her.

“What happened?” Emma asked.

“I saw a woman in the river!”

They looked into the water, but the woman was gone.

That evening, Amanda told Granny everything.

Instead of laughing, Granny became frightened.

“You must stay away from that river,” she said.

“Why?” Amanda asked.

Granny looked away.

“Because there are some things about your past that you are not ready to know.”

Amanda knew immediately that Granny was hiding something.

A few weeks later, Granny became seriously ill. One night, she called Amanda to her bedside.

“There is something I should have told you,” she whispered.

Granny reached beneath her pillow and brought out an old piece of cloth. Inside it was a drawing of the necklace Amanda had worn since she was a baby.

“I found you beside the river,” Granny confessed. “You were only a baby. You were lying there alone.”

Amanda's eyes filled with tears.

“Who were my parents?”

“I don't know,” Granny replied. “But I believe the river knows.”

Amanda held her hand.

“Why didn't you tell me before?”

“Because I was afraid that when you discovered the truth, I would lose you.”

Granny smiled weakly.

“You were never abandoned, Amanda. Remember that.”

Those were her final words.

Granny died before sunrise.

Amanda was heartbroken.

After the funeral, strange things began happening in the village. Fishermen started seeing strange lights beneath the river. Fish disappeared from their nets, and sometimes people heard a woman's voice calling from the water.

The villagers became frightened.

Then one night, a terrible storm hit the village. The river rose dangerously high, and people began running from their homes.

Someone shouted, “Amanda is the cause!”

Soon, others joined in.

“She came from the river!”

“She must be a spirit!”

Amanda ran away crying.

She reached the river and fell to her knees.

“Why is this happening to me?”

The water suddenly began to glow.

The mysterious woman appeared again.

This time, Amanda was not afraid.

“Who are you?” she asked.

The woman smiled.

“I am your mother.”

Amanda froze.

“My mother?”

“Yes. I am the guardian of the kingdom beneath the river. You were born there, but I sent you to the land because dangerous people wanted to use your power.”

Amanda touched her necklace.

“What power?”

“The power to protect both worlds.”

Suddenly, the river rose behind them.

“The village is in danger,” her mother said. “Only you can stop the water.”

Amanda looked toward the village. She thought about Granny, Emma, Samuel, Peace, and everyone she loved.

She raised the necklace.

The blue stone began to shine brighter than the moon.

A huge wave rushed toward the village.

Amanda stretched out her hands.

“Stop!”

The wave froze.

For a moment, the entire river seemed to hold its breath.

Then the water slowly moved backward, returning to its normal level.

The storm disappeared.

When Amanda returned to the village, everyone was silent.

The villagers finally understood that she had never been their enemy.

The village elder stepped forward.

“We were wrong to blame you,” he said.

Amanda looked at the people who had once feared her.

She remembered Granny's final words.

You were never abandoned.

“I forgive you,” Amanda said.

From that day forward, Amanda was no longer treated as a curse. She became the protector of the village and the river.

Her mother continued to visit her through the water, and Amanda learned how to communicate with the creatures of the deep.

She never forgot Granny.

Every year, she returned to the place where Granny had first found her. She placed flowers on the river and whispered, “Thank you for choosing me.”

One evening, as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, Amanda stood beside the river with Emma, Samuel, and Peace.

She looked into the water and saw her mother's smiling face.

“You finally found where you belong,” her mother said.

Amanda smiled.

“Yes. I belong here.”

She looked at her friends and then at the peaceful village behind her.

For the first time, she no longer wondered who she was.

She was not a curse.

She was not a monster.

She was not an abandoned child.

She was Amanda—the girl who belonged to two worlds.

The daughter of the river.

The protector of the village.

The Child of the Deep.

And from that day forward, the river was never feared again.

It became a symbol of hope, reminding everyone that sometimes the greatest mystery in our lives can lead us to the place where we truly belong.
