THE HIDDEN TREASURE

THE HIDDEN TREASURE

Once upon a time in a quiet village with high green hills, lived a poor young farmer named John. He was employed from early in the morning till late in the evening on a little piece of land he had inherited from his dad. John was a hard worker, honest and hopeful; life was hard for him.

One evening, John saw an old man, sitting under a big tree in the village road, on his way back from the farm. The man was tired and thirsty. John paused and gave him a drink of water from his water bottle.

“Thank you, young man,” replied the old stranger with a smile. “You're kind and you're kind of a big deal.”

The old man took a sip of the water and looked up at the hills.

“For many years now,” he said, “this was a secret treasure, which lay around these hills, but many people have searched for it, but nobody has found it.”

John became curious. “What is this treasure?”

The old man smiled mysteriously. That's up to you to find out.

The next morning, John decided to search for the treasure. He was carrying a hoe and was walking towards the hills. He looked under rocks, near trees, and in and around abandoned paths. He didn't see any sign of life for several days.

He was ridiculed by some of the villagers.

“John, what are you doing? What you're doing is a waste of time,” they said. There, there is no treasure.”

However, John could not give up.

One day, digging near an old tree, his hoe hit something solid. He was excited and his heart raced. Deeper he went and found a little box of wood in the ground.

With trembling hands, he opened it.

When he was surprised to find no gold coins or jewels within. Rather, he discovered a little bag of seeds and a note.

The note read:

Not all treasure can be made of gold, but plant your seed, tend to it, and plant the fruits of your labor to those in need and your treasure will be greater than you could bury.

At first, John was disappointed. He was going for wealth. However, he obeyed the directions. He sowed his seed on his land and watered them the next morning.

After several weeks green plants grew up and became very small. Several months later, the plants produced healthy, vigorous crops. They made more food than John ever had in his life.

John would give some of the produce to the needy families in the village. He also distributed seeds to other farmers and shared knowledge on cultivating crops with them.

The village was soon to change. Farms were greener and families had food to eat and people started assisting each other.

When John was a little bit older, he was one of the most respected village men. One day he was reunited with the old stranger.

“Now you have discovered the treasure,” replied the old man.

John smiled. “Yes, it was never there on the ground, it was there in the opportunity to help others.”

The old man nodded and went down the road.

The villagers knew from that day on that there was an important lesson: The best things in life are not necessarily ones you have, they are ones you make and share with others.
