THE FARMER AND THE GOLDEN SEED
story

THE FARMER AND THE GOLDEN SEED

There was once a farmer named Shaba who lived in a small village, surrounded by green hills and fertile fields. He was known as a man of honesty, patience and love towards the land. Every morning before the sun would rise Shaba would pray and then go to his farm to plant his crops.

Life was not easy for Shaba but he did work hard. Occasionally, the rain delayed in a year and many farmers in the village lost their crops. There were also some problems with Shaba, but he didn't give up. He kept busy ploughing his land, hoping for better times.

One morning, Shaba was digging at a corner of his farm when he found something shiny under the ground. He stooped down to take it up. To his astonishment, it was a little golden seed!

Shaba was in wonderment. “What could this be? Gold?” he asked himself.

He took the seed home and showed it to his family. He was advised to sell it and use the proceeds of the sale to resolve their issues. They would be able to fix their houses, get food and new farming equipment.

Shaba thought carefully. But there was something in him that said the seed was destined for more.

This seed was not given to me for the purpose of making me rich, he said, “I don't think this seed was given to me for that.” “In my opinion, I ought to put it in the ground.”

The next day, Shaba sowed the golden seed on the best land of his farm. He watered it daily, and he fenced it off from the animals. There followed days, but nothing happened.

His neighbors started to laugh him to scorn.

“You sowed a golden seed, and a golden tree grew up:” they sneered.

Shaba ignored them. He remained tilling the land.

Several weeks later, a small golden green plant emerged. Shaba was delighted. The plant grew taller each day until it was a great tree of golden leaves, with shining fruits.

The news of this quickly made its way throughout the village. The strange tree was visited by people from all over the world.

As the fruits started to ripen, Shaba found there were a number of common seeds in each fruit. He knew that the golden seed was not intended for his own benefit. It was given to him, so that he could create abundance for others.

The seeds were distributed freely by Shaba to the villagers. Everyone planted them. Gradually, all over the village, healthy farms and bountiful harvests sprang up.

The villagers laughed at Shaba, but they were sorry.

One of them said, "You are a dumb man!" “But you have been patient and faithful to God.”

Shaba smiled and said, “It was never the golden seed that was the treasure, it was the opportunity to plant, care for and share the harvest.

The village prospered from then on. No family was left without food and people began to support each other.

Shaba remained humble. He still worked the land in the way he had done all along for he knew that wealth was not in gold but in the lives that we touch and in the good that we leave behind.

Moral: Opportunities are often small yet. By faith, patience, effort and generosity, ‘one thing can be a blessing to many'.
