One of the greatest gifts God has given to His children is the Holy Ghost. He is the Spirit of God who lives and works in those who are believers; He gives strength, wisdom, guidance, comfort, power to live according to the will of God. No one can make it to the Christian end without the strength of God. Every day we need the presence and power of the Holy Ghost.
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit. Jesus told them that they will receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon them (Acts 1:8). This power was given to enable them to become bold witnesses of Christ. The disciples were sometimes fearful and insecure before the Holy Ghost came upon them. However, once they were filled with the Spirit they were courageous and dedicated to evangelizing.
It is the power of the Holy Ghost that creates transformation. As the Spirit of God fills a man's life, he starts to transform the heart, character, thoughts and actions. What some people have as an influence can become powerless. Replacing anger with patience, hatred with love, fear with courage, and confusion with peace. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control are the fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23.
The Holy Ghost also empowers the believer in times of tribulation. Sometimes life gets too hard and we feel like we can't do it anymore. There may be economic hardships, setbacks, disappointments, rejection, persecution or a lack of direction in our lives. But the Holy Ghost reminds us that God is not forsaking us. He provides us with strength to continue to trust God when we don't understand what is happening in our world.
The other significant work of the Holy Ghost is guidance. We have a lot of voices in front of us, some are more right for us than others. The Holy Ghost helps believers develop spiritual discernment and make decisions that agree with God's Word. He teaches us to listen, to pray, to wait, and to obey rather than just react on emotion.
In addition to the spiritual gifts for prophecy, the Holy Ghost provides spiritual gifts for service. God gives different gifts to different believers that they can use to build up His body and to benefit others. These gifts are not to be proud of, to compete for. They are obligations to take with modesty, affection and sagacity.
Moreover, the Holy Ghost empowers to preach the gospel boldly. Many are afraid to be rejected or criticized, but God's Spirit can give them the courage to speak about Christ and live out their lives publicly for Him. The power of the Holy Ghost is not to make us "famous" rather it is to make us useful in God's power.
So it is better never to rely wholly on our own strength. It is important that we give our lives to God in prayer, worship, obedience, and the study of His Word continually. When we are guided by the Holy Ghost, our lives can be a means of God's love and God's purpose.
May we look for not only the blessing of God, but also His presence. Fill our hearts and strengthen our faith, guide our steps, and help us become what God has called us to be may the Holy Ghost fill our hearts. “My Spirit will be upon you, it is not by might nor power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord.” — Zechariah 4:6
