Nigeria Face a Big Test as Europe Prepares for Another Night of Football Drama

Nigeria Face a Big Test as Europe Prepares for Another Night of Football Drama

Nigeria return to action today, September 29, with the Super Eagles facing Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time in Bissau, and there is plenty at stake for Éric Chelle’s team. Nigeria began the qualifying campaign with a 2–1 comeback victory over Madagascar, while Guinea-Bissau also started with a victory, defeating Tanzania 2–0 away from home. This makes today’s encounter much more than another ordinary qualifying match; it is an early opportunity for Nigeria to establish control of the group.

My biggest concern for Nigeria is that Guinea-Bissau will not approach this game with fear. They have already shown that they can win away from home, and their forwards have publicly acknowledged Nigeria’s threat while insisting that they believe they can take maximum points. That should be enough warning for the Super Eagles. Nigeria have talented attacking players, but the team cannot afford another slow start like the one against Madagascar, when they conceded first before George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor completed the comeback. The performance must be more controlled from the beginning if Nigeria want to leave Bissau with another three points.

The Ilenikhena story is also one of the most interesting parts of Nigeria’s current campaign. The young forward announced himself with a goal on his senior international debut against Madagascar, while Moses Usor also scored on his debut to secure the victory. However, Ilenikhena’s availability for today’s match has become a concern, with reports indicating that he is doubtful after the opening game. That could force Chelle to adjust his attacking plan. Nigeria still have quality options, but the real test will be whether the team can maintain the same attacking energy without depending on one particular player to provide the decisive moment.

Away from Africa, Europe is preparing for another major night of international football as the UEFA Nations League continues. The biggest fixtures include Spain against Croatia, Czechia against England and Scotland against Switzerland. Spain will enter their match with confidence after defeating England 3–2 at Wembley in their opening game, while Croatia also began with a victory over Czechia. England, therefore, face another important test after a match in which their attacking quality was evident but defensive mistakes proved costly. The Czechia game gives Thomas Tuchel’s side an opportunity to respond, but another defensive collapse would create even more questions around the team.

Spain versus Croatia could be another fascinating contest because both nations already have three points and have demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest international level. Spain’s comeback victory over England was particularly significant because it showed their ability to recover under pressure, while Croatia started the competition by beating Czechia 2–1. With Luka Modrić still providing experience and leadership for Croatia and Spain possessing considerable technical quality across the pitch, this is the kind of fixture that can become a tactical battle rather than simply a contest decided by individual brilliance.

England’s situation deserves particular attention. They lost 3–2 to Spain in their opening Nations League match, and the result exposed defensive problems that have been discussed ahead of the Czechia encounter. Reports indicate that England have conceded in six consecutive matches, while Tuchel has chosen to maintain significant continuity rather than completely change his defensive structure. In my view, England’s biggest challenge today is not their ability to score goals; it is whether they can remain disciplined when they do not have complete control of the match. International football punishes defensive concentration lapses, and England have already experienced that against Spain.

There were also major results yesterday that have already shaped the Nations League conversation. France defeated Belgium 1–0 through a late Michael Olise goal, while Italy produced one of the strongest results of the night by beating Türkiye 4–1. Sweden defeated Poland 3–1, Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Romania 4–2, and Northern Ireland drew 0–0 with Hungary. The France victory was particularly dramatic because Olise’s late solo effort settled a tight match, while Italy’s four-goal performance demonstrated how quickly a game can change when a team takes its chances.

For Nigerian football fans, however, everything eventually comes back to the Super Eagles. Nigeria have already collected three points, and another victory today would put Chelle’s side in a strong early position in Group L. But Guinea-Bissau have their own confidence after defeating Tanzania, so Nigeria should expect a difficult away match rather than an easy three points. The European fixtures may attract much of the global attention, but for Nigerian supporters, the most important football story of the day is simple: can the Super Eagles turn their promising start into another victory and continue building momentum toward AFCON 2027?
