The Subtle Power of Being Present

The Subtle Power of Being Present

We commemorate significant events. The advancement.

The marriage.

The start-up.

The final hurdle.

However, there aren't many big moments in life.

The majority of life is about showing up, bringing your tired body to work, attending the gym even when you don't feel like it, being there for a friend going through something, even if you don't have anything helpful to say, performing self-care on days when you feel like quitting.

Building character begins there. In the boring middle, not in the highlight reel.

1. Intensity is a losing strategy.

We enjoy 30-day challenges that are intense. All-nighters. "A new year, a new me." However, intensity fades. Consistency increases. The person who writes 10,000 words in one weekend and then vanishes will lose to the person who writes 200 words per day for a year. In three months, the person who tries to become wealthy will lose to the person who saves a small amount each month. Rarely does progress come quickly. It's a quiet accumulation of insignificant, uninteresting choices.

2. Being present for others Teamwork, marriage, friendship, and parenting all depend on presence. Words need not be perfect. You must be present. "I am with you." I'll be there. "I can remember." When things get tough, people rarely remember what you say. They recall your presence, that you sent a text, that you sat with them in silence. Showing up is showing love.

3. Being Present for Yourself

The hardest one is this one. Sleeping over scrolling is the choice, deciding on the walk, a decision to apologize, deciding to start over after making a mistake. Those are the times when self-respect is built. You tell yourself, "I can trust me," each time you carry out your promise. Everything else is built on top of that trust.

How to Improve Your Skills

1. Reduce the bar: Don't try to be perfect. Ten minutes is better than one. Try to be present.

2. Connect it to who you are: "I'm someone who shows up" has more impact than "I have to do this."

3. Do you show up today? Track streaks, not outcomes. Yes. That is a victory.

4. Please accept my apologies for missing a day. The last twenty are not erased by that. Tomorrow, start over.

The majority of us wait to be inspired before showing up.

However, motivation does not come before action.

You are not required to be prepared.

You don't have to be motivated.

All you have to do is show up.

Because the individual who keeps showing up over time transforms into the person who everyone admires.

And last but not least, becomes someone of whom they can be proud.

Life is not built on big acts. It was built on quiet days when nobody was looking. You answer the alarm, the message you transmit, the route you take rather than scrolling. The intensity wears out. Presence endures.

Your work, your relationships, and who you become are all shaped by the seemingly insignificant choices you make over time. Being there for others means more than just saying nice things. It signifies "I'm here." It entails choosing people again, remembering, and sitting in silence.

When it's hard, keeping promises is part of being yourself. Self-respect develops there.

That is the beginning of trust.

To begin, you don't need to be motivated. You only need to begin. Reduce the bar.

Follow the streak.

If you miss a day, start over.

The person who consistently shows up develops into the person whom others can rely on over time. And perhaps most importantly, becomes someone of whom they are proud.
