The Influence Of Your Friends And Your Environment Can Shapes Your Life

The age-old saying, "Show me your friends and I will reveal who you are," holds just as much truth today as it did when it was first expressed. In the quest for achievement, the company one keeps stands out as a significant factor, so much so that without the right companions, success can slip away entirely.

Just as a single sick sheep can infect a herd, one corrupt friend—especially if they are bold—can profoundly undermine the ethics of many individuals. Every young adult can remember the disastrous impact of a troublesome peer on an entire school, yet they often find it difficult to highlight a fellow student whose presence and influence were uplifting; this is likely because virtue, despite being more powerful, seldom stands out as clearly as wrongdoing.

Criminals awaiting execution have admitted that their descent into criminal behavior began in their youth, spurred by the reckless behavior of an unscrupulous companion who lured them away from innocence. Throughout one's life, even extending into later years, both lifestyle and character are swayed by the circles one moves in. If this observation is accurate for the wiser and older, it holds even stronger weight for the young, imaginative, and impressionable.

Humans are often described as "mimicking creatures." This statement is certainly applicable during formative years, and the inclination to mimic persists to varying degrees throughout life. Imitation accounts for the bizarre shifts in trends, and the urge to conform, often referred to as "keeping up," stems primarily from social connections.

During adolescence, a nurturing environment at home may mitigate the influence of negative peers that a boy occasionally encounters, but once he transitions into adulthood and faces the challenges of the world, away from his family and friends, he becomes highly vulnerable to harmful influences.

A young man arriving in the city to pursue his dreams is generally more likely to fall prey to corrupt associates compared to someone who was raised there, as the latter usually possess greater life experience and better friendships. A farmer's son, who finds himself in a bustling metropolis for the first time—feeling isolated and relatively friendless—experiences the city as an entirely foreign environment, which it truly is. The fast-paced, fashionable crowd stands in stark contrast to his own awkward movement and simple attire. The cacophony unsettles him. The frenetic energy of commerce astonishes him; in that moment, he feels as lonely as if he were at the heart of a desolate wasteland rather than amidst the vibrant core of a large city.

Regardless of the extent to which the young man may possess both physical prowess and mental resilience, in these conditions, he is likely, at least temporarily, to undervalue his own abilities. He is significantly influenced by the perceived cleverness or refined behavior of the individuals he encounters at his boarding house or those he interacts with in his job. It takes considerable moral strength for him to withstand, in a dignified manner, the teasing—whether subtle or overt—from peers who consider him a "rube" or an "inexperienced novice." The Sunday attire he once wore proudly while attending church with his mother might now evoke feelings of embarrassment; he might even secretly aspire to match the style of his peers once he accumulates sufficient funds.

This is a vital stage in the journey of every young man embarking on a career, and it holds particular importance for him as someone who hails from a rural background. He discovers that his peers may indulge in smoking or drinking, or potentially both, activities he previously viewed with disdain. Additionally, he realizes they frequently visit entertainment venues, the allure and enigma of which spark his interest, if not jealousy, as he listens to their conversations about them.
