The Heart We Share, the Thoughts We Hide

It's lovely to have a heart to share. You laugh, dream, remember, and converse together, and moments become special just because you experienced them together. However, even the closest of friends can have thoughts behind their smile, feelings under their words and fears too deep to reach.

We tend to overestimate our knowledge of people if we know them well and assume that we know them everything. We see them when they are happy, listen when they are silent, and see their smile when they're hiding something. But in reality, no one can fully fill the other person's heart. For all of us there is a private world inside.

We sometimes conceal our thoughts out of fear we will be misunderstood. We fear that our feelings may cause people to judge us or react differently to us if we tell them, or what we say doesn't make them accept us. Then rather than saying what is in our minds, we just say, "I'm fine", and we show our smile.

But sometimes, we are not fine.

We can joke with our own loved ones and have our own battles, which they don't know about. We might hope other people to believe we are there and have faith in us, and we hope they believe, but we have a hard time believing in us. May be able to say that everything will be okay, and at the same time wonder if everything will ever be okay.

There are also times when two people feel the same way, but say it in their own unique way. One person can let it all out: “I miss you.” The other person who doesn't say it can hope the other person already knows. One might want to say sorry, but words won't come out of pride. Another may want to stay but act as if they do not care, for fear of rejection.

This is where things can get complicated with relationships.

Silence can cause a separation between two people who love one another. Resentment can develop from a simple misunderstanding. Insecurities can grow out of a secret fear. Incomplete or unanswered questions can turn into suspicion. People can fall out of love with each other even when they are not abandoning their love but when they stop talking about what is important.

The heart must have a home to be honest.

Relationships that are such that we can be able to say, "This hurt Me," and not be attacked. We should seek out those who will listen when we have a hard time putting our words into sentences. We must muster the courage to say, "I am afraid," "I am confused," "I need help," or, "I want you to stay.

Not all thoughts need to be communicated to all people, of course. Privacy is a human right. However, when it comes to the people we truly care for and trust, there are many wounds that can be avoided with a little honest communication.

Occasionally a person beside us is bearing a storm beneath a peaceful manner. At times the person who makes everybody laugh is the one who really needs to be asked, "Are you really OK?

We are connected by the heart and can be divided by thoughts that we keep hidden.

Maybe it's time to learn to listen, not with the eyes or ears, but with the soul. One should hear not just what people say, but what they don't.

Behind each smile, you can be sure there is a story. There can be a feeling behind every silence. But for every heart, there could be a thought that waits for a place where it can be heard.
