BE WISE TO LOVE CORRECTION

Proverbs 15 includes five references to correction and discipline, which, as we know, are primary themes of the Book of Proverbs. It is interesting to me that many things Proverbs encourages us to love are things we don’t even like, let alone love. No wonder Solomon mentions them over and over.

I am sure he does this hoping that we will eventually realize how important they are. Do you love correction? If so, you are among the few who do. A person must be very secure and confident in order to love and gladly receive correction.

One reason we struggle to receive correction, I think, is that we view it improperly. We typically see it as pointing out something wrong about ourselves, and we don’t like for other people to notice or mention our flaws.

But I say that correction is simply right direction, not an accusation of inferiority or incompetent.

A person may do something that is very good but still does not meet our specific need or even accomplish what they were hired to do.

Over the course of almost 5 years, we have had two or three people who have not been able to stay with us because they simply could not take correction of any kind. That is sad. Now, our creative team is wonderful and they frequently provide designs that are even better than what I think I want. On the few occasions when they don’t, I am glad to report that they are very cooperative and agreeable to work with.

Anyone who is employed by an organization should always work to give the employer what they want. That’s what they are hired to do. People who work for others may eventually be able to open their own businesses, but as long as they work for someone else, they are getting paid to please the person or organization that compensates them.

Anyone who must always be right in order to be happy will have great difficulty getting through life. I believe that if we know our value in Christ and are confident and secure in Him, we can learn to love correction and receive it as a gift from God.

Some people overcorrect others or correct them using harsh tones. This can break a person’s spirit, and it is wrong to treat someone that way. When people find something to correct about almost everything and everyone they encounter, that usually means something is wrong with their attitude and they need to be corrected themselves. Jesus says in Matthew 7 that we are to take the log out of our own eye and then we can see clearly how to take the speck out of another’s eye (v. 3–5). Another way of communicating this principle would be, “Don’t try to correct anyone else unless you are willing to be corrected when you need to be.”

Loving correction is as challenging as staying calm and gentle when someone is speaking to you in an angry way. It is not easy, but it must be very important, because it is one of the main subjects covered in the Book of Proverbs.

The wise person loves correction. The wise person also knows how and when to give correction in ways that help others receive it well. We can.learn to serve correction covered in sugar, meaning that we can encourage people first about all the things they do right and then mention the one thing we would like them to change.

Let me encourage you to think first, before offering correction. In addition, pray about the right way to approach correction, and God will give you grace to do it effectively and graciously. Also, let us all pray that we can learn to love and appreciate correction when someone offers it in a spirit of love.
