David lived in a small village and the surrounding land was green and dusty. Born into a poor family, he had a dream that was larger than his family. David wanted to be an engineer and make stuff that would make people's lives easier in his community.
David was a big help to his mother in the mornings before school, taking her out to fetch water, and helping his father on the farm. He studied under an old mango tree after school while the other children played football, with their old books in his hand.
He was ridiculed by his fellow students.
One of them said, "Do you think that with studying these old books you will become an engineer?
David simply smiled. I don't have the things I need now, but I can have what I need tomorrow.
The most difficult situation for him was when his father fell gravely ill and was no longer able to work. The family was unable to send the children to school, let alone cover their school fees. David thought that he should drop out of school to work with his mother.
One night, he sat outside their little house, gazing at the stars.
“No, I do not want to give up,” he softly said. “But I don't know how to proceed.”
His mother was sitting by his side and holding his hand.
“Life can make it hard for you to go, but don't let the difficulty determine your destiny, Son. If it is important to you, pursue it.
Those words gave David new strength.
The following day he started to seek small digs after school. He helped farmers to transport goods, cleaned shops, and helped an old man with his garden. He saved every penny that he made to go to school.
Months passed, and David continued working and studying. Eventually he made it his goal to impress his mathematics teacher with his diligence.
The teacher felt it his duty to assist him. He gave David books, and recommended him for a scholarship test.
David studied a lot more.
On the day of examination, he was confident to enter the classroom. He recalled all his tribulations, all the nights he had sat under a feeble lamp, and all the persons who had declared his dream impossible.
The results were published a few weeks later.
David was a winner of the scholarship.
His mom was over the moon happy when she heard. David wrapped his arms around her.
Years passed. Finally, David graduated as an engineer. He then went back to his village and applied his expertise to help enhance the roads, water and other community projects.
What had seemed impossible to him now was being realized before their eyes.
David smiled as he stood under the same mango tree in which he had studied years ago.
He realized that one must work for a dream to be realised. They become real when we have faith, courage, hard work, patience and determination.
David had found his dream in poverty, disappointment and fear and he had captured it.
His tale was meant as a lesson for all the young people in the village:
Don't believe what you see as your current situation because the future is not out of reach. Keep on dreaming and remember every great thing started with someone who didn't quit.
