YOUR BEST FRIEND CAN BECOME YOUR GREATEST ENEMY

The best relationship in the world is friendship. A true friend is with you in your tribulations, rejoices your victories, hears your sorrows and strengthens your weaknesses. But not all friendships are founded on true love and loyalty. That's when the person we trust the most, can hurt us the most. Your best friend can indeed be your worst enemy.

It's a harsh reality that we sometimes expose our most intimate personal confidences to our best friends. We tell them about our dreams and weaknesses and the plans we have in mind and the struggles we have and our personal things because we believe that they will protect our trust. However, when friendship becomes jealous, competitive or even hateful, the information that we have shared in confidence can be used against us.

A jealous friend may appear happy when you are successful and then be unhappy when you aren't. Rather than encouraging you, this person might try to discourage you, minimize your successes or make you feel insecure about yourself. At times they could try to support you but work against you in secret.

A betrayal by an outsider can cause damage, but one by a close friend can be so much more devastating because the hurt is even more profound when it comes from a friend. As you start to wonder: How did this happen to me? You may come to distrust people around you in the experience.

But not all "friendships" that come to an end are a result of being their enemy. Individuals change, develop and sometimes move in various directions. It's important to know when a friendship has gone wrong. A true friend should never be in competition, manipulate, expose your secrets, celebrate your failures.

That doesn't preclude us from living without trust in others. When we put walls around our hearts, then life becomes lonely. Rather, it is better to learn how to mix love and wisdom. It takes time to earn trust, but never to grant it. Be mindful of actions instead of words, true friendship is shown through being loyal, honest, respectful and consistent.

Don't let bitterness ruin your peace, if your best friend becomes your enemy. You might feel disappointed, angry, heartbroken but revenge won't heal you. One thing that often is the best solution is to create distance, ensure your peace, learn from it and keep moving forward.

Don't forget that a friend's departure doesn't mean an end to your future. Some come to us to be present and some come to teach us lessons. With a painful friend, you learn about boundaries, wisdom, self-respect, and selecting your crowd.

So the best defense against spies is not suspicion, but wisdom. Be loving towards people, respect your friends and be loyal, but never neglect the signs. Stay around others who are really interested in you developing.

Your best friend can be your enemy, but their betrayal can not be your biggest loss. Sometimes, the person who you've trusted will be the teacher who teaches you how to protect your heart, make the right friends and how to become stronger than ever.
