It was nearing the end of the day as Daniel noticed that he was taking the wrong path as the sun was slowly setting behind the hills. He was going to his uncle's village, but he did not follow the main road, but a narrow path, that went deep into the woods.
Initially Daniel did not fear. It was beautiful to see the birds singing and the trees. As it grew towards evening, the forest grew darker and still. The rest of the sunlight was blocked by tall trees, and bizarre noises could be heard from the bushes.
Daniel ceased to move and surveyed the surroundings. “It seems I’ve become lost,” he whispered.
He felt that rather than standing still he should go forward. Then he heard a great rustling in the background. He turned around, but didn't see anyone. His heart began to beat faster.
He said, "Who is there?“Who is there?” he asked.
There was no answer.
Daniel continued walking. After some time he noticed that there was a small light between the trees. He was hopeful and ran towards it. As he approached him, he noticed an old wood house.
He knocked on the door. It was opened by an old lady.
“So who are you? What are you doing in this forest at this hour?” she asked.
My name is Daniel, I am lost. Help me find my way out please?
The woman opened the door and let him in, and gave him some food and water. She said that wild animals roamed around the forest in the night and it was dangerous.
“If you don't get out of here before sunrise, you're in trouble,” she scolded. “There's an old road behind this house follow it east and it will take you to the village.”
Daniel gave them thanks and spent the night in the house safely.
The woman showed him the road on an early morning the next day. She gave him a little lantern before he left.
“Take this, you might need it,” she said.
Daniel walked for a number of hours. On the way, he crossed a small stream and went up a rocky hill. He was exhausted, but he recalled his father's and mother's words: "Never give up when you have a problem.
After awhile, he spotted houses in the distance. He had arrived in the village.
Daniel was overjoyed. His concerned uncle ran towards him and hugged him.
“Where have you been?” asked his uncle.
Daniel shared with him all the things that had occurred. His uncle heard him and he was grateful for God's protection.
Daniel learned an important lesson on that trip through the dark woods. Courage, patience and determination may lead a person to find a way forward when circumstances are difficult because of fear.
That's when Daniel never forgot the old woman who helped him and how mysterious she was. But when he went back to the forest, the little wooden house was no longer there, and he would wonder, who is she?
