THE GIRL WHO KNEW MY SECRET

Chapter 14: The Confrontation

Daniel looked at Amara for a moment before handing her the envelope.

She took it from him and opened it carefully. Inside was an old photograph of Mia standing beside a woman she didn't recognize. They were outside a building that looked familiar, but Amara couldn't remember where she had seen it before.

There was also a small note written in Mia's handwriting.

Amara read it quietly.

Daniel watched her face as she tried to understand what it meant.

"Who is this woman?" Amara asked, pointing at the photograph.

Daniel looked down at the picture.

"That's my mother."

Amara raised her head and stared at him.

"Your mother? Why was Mia with your mother?"

Daniel took a deep breath. "That's what I've been trying to explain. My mother knew something about your family, and Mia found out about it."

Amara couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had spent days asking questions about Mia, Zara, and the night everything changed. Now Daniel was telling her that their families were connected too.

"What exactly did Mia find out?"

"I don't know everything," Daniel replied. "But I remember hearing my parents arguing about it a few days before Mia disappeared. My father told my mother to stop getting involved in something that didn't concern her."

"And you never thought to tell me this?"

"I was scared, Amara. My father warned me to stay away from you. He said there were things I didn't understand and that getting involved would only make matters worse."

Amara shook her head in disappointment.

"You all keep saying you were scared. What about me? I was there that night too, but nobody seems to care about what I went through."

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I'm sorry."

Amara wanted to believe him, but she had heard enough apologies to know that they didn't always mean anything.

She looked at the photograph again. There was something written along the bottom, but the writing was faint. She moved closer to the light and tried to read it.

The truth started here.

Those words made her even more confused.

"What does this mean?" she asked.

Daniel looked at the photograph and went quiet.

"Daniel, I'm asking you a question."

"I think Mia wanted you to find something. Maybe she left that photograph for a reason."

"Then why didn't you give it to me earlier?"

He looked away.

"Because I was afraid of what you might discover."

Amara felt tears building in her eyes, but she tried to hold them back.

"You were my friend, Daniel. At least, I thought you were. I trusted you, and you knew I was struggling to remember what happened. You could have helped me instead of keeping everything to yourself."

"I know I made a mistake."

"Then help me fix it. Tell me what you know about that night."

Daniel leaned against the wall and took a moment before speaking.

"After Mia left the school, I saw her near the main road. She was talking to someone on the phone, and she looked upset. I wanted to ask her what was wrong, but she told me to leave her alone."

"Did you see who she was talking to?"

"No. But I heard her say she couldn't keep the secret anymore."

Amara's eyes widened.

"What secret?"

"I don't know. Before I could ask her anything, she walked away. The next morning, everyone was talking about how Mia was missing. My parents were acting strangely, and my father told me not to mention seeing her."

Amara stared at him.

"So you listened to him and said nothing."

Daniel nodded.

"I thought she would come back. I didn't think staying quiet would make everything worse."

Amara turned away from him. She was angry, but she also felt sad. Mia had been missing for a long time, and the people who might have helped explain what happened had chosen to protect themselves instead.

Before she could say anything else, someone called her name.

They both turned.

Zara was standing a short distance away. She walked towards them, looking from Amara to Daniel.

"What happened?" she asked.

Amara held up the photograph.

"Daniel finally told me something. His mother knew Mia, and his father warned him to stay away from me after she disappeared."

Zara's face changed.

"His mother?"

"Yes. Did you know about this?"

Zara shook her head slowly.

"No, I didn't."

Amara studied her face, trying to decide whether she was telling the truth.

"I'm tired of finding out things one piece at a time. If either of you knows anything else, I want to hear it now."

Zara looked at Daniel, but he remained silent.

Then she turned back to Amara.

"There is something I remember about that night," she said. "I didn't tell you before because I wasn't sure it mattered."

Amara stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Zara took a breath.

"Before Mia disappeared, she told me she was going to meet someone. She said that person could explain everything, but she wouldn't tell me who it was."

"Did she say where she was going?"

Zara nodded.

"She mentioned your house."

Amara felt a chill run through her.

"My house?"

"Yes. I didn't know she actually went there until you started asking questions."

Amara looked down at the photograph in her hands. Her mother had denied knowing anything about Mia, but now both Daniel and Zara had given her reasons to doubt that answer.

She put the photograph back inside the envelope and held it tightly.

That evening, she would ask her mother again. This time, she wasn't going to accept another excuse.

She needed the truth, even if it changed everything she believed about her family.
