THE Night I Cried And No One Knew

*THE NIGHT I CRIED AND NO ONE KNEW*

People saw me during the day and thought I was strong. I was smiling, greeting people, even cracking jokes like nothing was wrong. But nobody knew what happened at night when I entered my room and locked the door. There is a type of pain that does not make noise, it just sits in your chest and makes you cry silently. That was the kind of pain I felt last year, and there was one night in particular that I will never forget.

*The Day That Led To That Night*

That day had been one of the worst days of my life. I had gone out since morning looking for money to pay my house rent that was already overdue by two months. My landlord had already warned me for the last time. I visited three of my old friends, two of my uncles, and even a former boss. Everywhere I went, I got the same story, "there is no money," "come next week," "things are hard." I trekked from Mile 3 to Mile 1 under hot sun because I did not even have transport fare to go back home.

When I finally got home around 8 AM, I was tired, hungry, and completely empty. I had not eaten anything since morning. I entered my one room, looked around, and saw how empty my life had become. My gas cylinder was empty, my pot was empty, my life felt empty too. My phone was silent, no message, no call from anyone. That was when it hit me that I was truly alone.

*The Cry I Could Not Control*

I sat on my bed at first, just staring at the wall. I was trying to be strong, I was telling myself "guy you be man, man no dey cry." But my chest was heavy. Before I knew it, tears started coming out of my eyes. I tried to stop it, but I could not. I started crying like a small child. I cried for my failed business, I cried for my sick mother, I cried for my rent, I cried for all the friends who abandoned me.

It was not a normal cry. It was the kind of cry that comes from deep inside your soul. I covered my mouth with my pillow so that my neighbours would not hear me. I did not want anyone to hear me because I was ashamed. In this country, they tell you a man should not cry, a man should be strong. So I cried silently, my body shaking, my pillow getting soaked with tears. For almost an hour, I was just there crying in that dark room.

*What Was Going Through My Mind*

While I was crying, many thoughts were going through my mind. I was asking God questions, "why me? What did I do wrong? I have always tried to be good to people, why is my own like this?" I remembered how I used to help people when I had money. I remembered all my plans and dreams that now looked impossible. I even thought of giving up completely that night. The thought came like, "what if I just end everything and have peace?" It was a very dark thought, and it scared me.

But after crying for a long time, something strange happened. The crying started to make me feel lighter. It was as if the tears were washing away some of the heavy pain in my chest. I started breathing better.

*The Morning After*

I did not even know when I slept off on that floor. I woke up around 4 AM, my eyes were swollen, my head was aching, but my heart was calmer. I stood up, washed my face, and looked at myself in the mirror. I told myself, "you cried last night, but you are still here. That means you are stronger than what is trying to break you."

That night taught me that crying is not weakness. Crying is how the soul releases pain when the mouth cannot explain it. Since that night, I never hold my tears again. If I want to cry, I cry, then I clean my face and continue fighting.

*Conclusion*

Many people are going through that same silent night. They smile in public but cry in private. If you are one of them, I want you to know you are not weak, you are human. That night I cried and no one knew, but God knew, and that cry was the beginning of my healing. Sometimes you need to break down completely before you can build up again. Do not be ashamed of your tears, your tears are proof that you are still feeling, and as long as you can still feel, you can still rise again.
