Story Summary
Dara Adebayo is twenty-three, ambitious, observant, and just successful enough to know that her life is changing. She is a Nigerian actress whose career has finally moved beyond small auditions, background roles, and jobs that paid mostly in promises. People are beginning to recognize her. Interviews are appearing on her schedule. Brands have started sending messages. Invitations to events she once watched through her phone now arrive with her name printed on them. It is exciting, and occasionally
But Dara is still trying to understand what kind of person she wants to be while everyone around her seems to have already decided.
At home, her family still treats her like the daughter who needs reminding to call her mother. Her mother worries about her, her relatives have become interested in her career, and old friends notice that Dara's life no longer fits neatly into theirs. Her best friend, Mimi, has known her long before anyone cared about her name, and their friendship becomes one of the few places where Dara can stop performing and simply be herself.
Then comes an opportunity that feels different from everything she has done before.
Dara is invited to audition for the lead role in a new production. She expects another audition, another room full of actors trying to look confident, another polite message telling her they will get back to her. Instead, the meeting leaves her with the possibility of becoming the face of a project that could change her career.
The opportunity has complications.
The people behind the production have their own expectations of Dara. Her manager sees the role as the chance they have been waiting for. Dara sees it as a chance to prove that she can carry a story rather than simply be noticed in one. As preparations begin, she finds herself surrounded by producers, actors, journalists, stylists, photographers, event organizers, and people who suddenly seem to know things about her that she never shared.
Her growing career also begins affecting the rest of her life.
A friendship starts changing because Dara is difficult to reach. Her relationship with her family becomes more complicated as success brings new expectations. She meets people who are kind and others who are interested mainly in what they can do for them. Along the way, she develops a complicated connection with someone she never expected to become important to her, although neither of them is ready to admit what it means.
Meanwhile, the role that should have been the beginning of Dara's opportunity starts bringing memories and problems back into her life. Something about the production connects to a part of her past she thought she had left behind, forcing her to decide how much of herself she is willing to reveal to get what she wants.
It is about ambition, friendship, family, love, reputation, and the strange experience of becoming known while still trying to know yourself.
Nothing supernatural happens. There are no secret powers or impossible worlds. The story is simply about one young woman's life becoming much more eventful than she expected—and the choices she makes when the life she dreamed about finally begins asking something from her in return.
