Becoming a different version of yourself

Becoming a Different Version of Yourself

There comes a point in life when you suddenly realize that you are not the same person you used to be.

And sometimes, you don't even know exactly when it happened.

You just wake up one day and realize that the things you used to tolerate now disturb your peace. The conversations you used to enjoy no longer interest you. The people you once couldn't imagine living without suddenly don't feel like home anymore.

And the strange part is, nobody necessarily did anything wrong.

You just changed.

I think one of the hardest parts of growing is realizing that you can outgrow a version of yourself you once loved.

There was a version of me that wanted to be available to everyone. I wanted to be understood. I wanted to keep everyone happy. I wanted to hold on to people, even when I knew some relationships were no longer good for me.

I thought being a good person meant always being there.

I thought saying no made me selfish.

I thought walking away meant I didn't care.

But life has a funny way of teaching you things you wouldn't have learned otherwise.

I've learned that protecting your peace isn't selfish.

I've learned that you can love people and still choose distance.

I've learned that being available all the time doesn't make you more valuable.

And I've learned that sometimes, the person you are becoming will require you to let go of the person you used to be.

A little bit of my own story

I remember a time when I was so afraid of disappointing people that I would keep putting myself in situations that made me uncomfortable just because I didn't want anyone to think I was ungrateful or difficult.

I kept telling myself, “Just endure it. Things will get better.”

But eventually, I realized something.

I wasn't really afraid of losing those situations or those people.

I was afraid of becoming the version of myself that could finally say, “This isn't good for me anymore.”

And when I finally started choosing myself, it felt strange.

I questioned myself.

I wondered if I was becoming too distant. Too selective. Too difficult.

But deep down, I knew something had changed.

I wasn't trying to become a different person.

I was simply becoming more honest about the person I already was.

That experience taught me that sometimes growth doesn't arrive with a big announcement.

Sometimes it looks like quietly saying no.

Sometimes it looks like not explaining yourself for the hundredth time.

Sometimes it looks like walking away from something you once begged to keep.

And sometimes, it looks like sitting alone and realizing, “I don't think I want this anymore.”

That doesn't mean the old version of you was bad.

She was simply doing the best she could with what she knew at the time.

And maybe that's what we forget when we look back at ourselves.

We judge our past selves with the wisdom we only have now.

We ask, “How could I have allowed that?”

“Why did I stay?”

“Why did I keep giving?”

“Why didn't I see it earlier?”

But maybe she didn't know what you know now.

Maybe she had to experience those things to become the person you are today.

Becoming a different version of yourself can also feel lonely.

Because when your mindset changes, not everyone around you changes with you.

Some people will still expect the old you.

The one who always says yes.

The one who explains herself constantly.

The one who forgives quickly.

The one who keeps showing up even when she's exhausted.

And when you stop being that person, some people may think you've changed for the worse.

But you know what?

You are allowed to change.

You are allowed to have new boundaries.

You are allowed to want different things.

You are allowed to become quieter, wiser, more selective, more intentional.

You are allowed to decide that certain things are no longer for you.

And you don't owe everyone an explanation for every change within you.

I'm learning that becoming a different version of yourself isn't about becoming perfect.

It is about becoming more honest with yourself.

Being honest about what hurts.

Being honest about what you want.

Being honest about what you can no longer carry.

Being honest about the kind of life you want to build.

Maybe growth doesn't always look like becoming someone completely new.

Maybe sometimes it looks like returning to yourself after spending so much time trying to be who everyone else needed you to be.

And maybe that's where I am right now.

Still becoming.

Still unlearning.

Still figuring things out.

Still making mistakes.

But different.

A little more aware.

A little more protective of my peace.

A little less afraid of letting go.

And finally understanding that not every version of me has to last forever.

Some versions of us are only meant to get us through certain seasons.

And when that season ends, we have to let ourselves change.

So if you're currently feeling like you don't recognize yourself anymore, maybe that's not something to be afraid of.

Maybe you're becoming.

Maybe you're growing into someone you haven't met yet.

And maybe, just maybe, the person you're becoming is exactly who you were always meant to be.

Becoming a different version of yourself can be uncomfortable.

But it can also be beautiful.

Because sometimes, losing who you were is how you finally meet who you're becoming.
