Letters We Never Sent
We wrote letters to each other
without ever touching paper,
without ink staining our fingers,
without an address written at the top.
They lived quietly inside us,
folded between the things we were too afraid to say.
I wrote you once
in the middle of the night,
when the world was quiet
and my heart was louder than usual.
I wrote,
βI miss you.β
Then I erased it.
Because missing someone
felt too much like admitting
that they still mattered.
You probably wrote one too.
Maybe yours began with my name,
maybe you stared at the empty page
wondering if you should tell me
that you still thought about us.
Maybe you wrote,
βIβm sorry.β
Maybe you never did.
And that's the strange thing about loveβ
sometimes the words are there,
waiting patiently behind our teeth,
but pride locks the door
and fear hides the key.
There were so many things
I wanted to tell you.
I wanted to tell you
that I noticed the little things.
The way your voice changed
when you were tired.
The way you laughed
when you tried not to.
The way you pretended to be okay
when I knew you weren't.
I wanted to tell you
that I remembered.
I remembered the conversations
that lasted until morning,
the stupid jokes that weren't even funny,
the comfortable silence
where neither of us needed to speak.
I remembered how easy it felt
to be myself around you.
And perhaps that was why
losing you hurt so much.
You weren't just someone I loved.
You were someone
I had slowly become comfortable loving.
There is a difference.
Some nights,
I still imagine what would happen
if one of those letters
found its way into your hands.
Would you smile?
Would you cry?
Would you call me?
Or would you read it quietly
and realize that we had both been carrying
the same feelings
in different hearts?
Maybe we were waiting
for the other person to be brave first.
Maybe we confused silence
with peace.
Maybe we thought
there would always be another day
to say what we meant.
But days have a cruel habit
of becoming years.
And now,
the letters remain unsent.
One carries an apology.
One carries forgiveness.
One says, βI still care.β
Another says, βI wish we had tried harder.β
There is even one
I never finished.
It simply says,
βI loved you.β
Nothing more.
Because sometimes
three words are enough
to explain an entire lifetime.
I don't know where you are now.
I don't know if you ever think of me
when a familiar song plays
or when the rain taps against your window
the way it used to on those quiet nights.
Maybe you have moved on.
Maybe I have too.
But somewhere inside me,
there is still a small room
where our unfinished story lives.
No photographs on the walls.
No promises on the table.
Just two chairs,
an old envelope,
and everything we never said.
Perhaps love doesn't always end
when people walk away.
Sometimes it ends
when the words finally stop hurting.
And ours?
Ours never really got that far.
We simply ran out of courage
before we ran out of feelings.
So here I am,
writing one final letter
I know I will never send.
Dear you,
I hope life has been gentle with you.
I hope you found the happiness
we once imagined together.
And if, by some strange miracle,
you ever wonder whether I caredβ
I did.
More than I knew how to say.
More than I knew how to show.
More than any letter
could ever hold.
And maybe that's where
our story will always remain:
between the words,
between the memories,
between goodbye and foreverβ
in the letters
we never sent.
