Chapter One — The New Boy

The first bell rang across Rosewood Academy, sending students rushing through the corridors before the teachers arrived.

It was Monday morning, and the school was already alive with noise.

Girls stood in small groups, talking excitedly about the weekend. Boys chased one another across the field despite the teachers warning them to get to class. Somewhere near the cafeteria, someone had already started arguing over a missing lunchbox.

But seventeen-year-old Amara Williams wasn't interested in any of it.

She sat quietly beside the classroom window, resting her chin on her palm while watching students enter the school gate.

"Amara!"

She turned.

Her best friend, Tessa, dropped into the seat beside her.

"You won't believe what I just heard."

Amara smiled. "You say that every Monday."

"This time I'm serious."

"Okay. Tell me."

Tessa leaned closer and lowered her voice.

"We're getting a new student."

Amara raised an eyebrow.

"So?"

"So?" Tessa repeated dramatically. "Apparently he's coming from one of the most expensive schools in the city."

Amara laughed.

"That's your big news?"

"No. There's more."

Before Tessa could continue, their class teacher walked into the room.

"Everyone, settle down."

The classroom became quiet.

Their teacher placed a few books on the desk before looking toward the door.

"We have a new student joining our class today. I expect everyone to make him feel welcome."

A tall boy walked into the classroom.

For a moment, the room became unusually quiet.

He wore the school uniform neatly, carrying a black backpack over one shoulder. His expression was calm, almost serious, and he seemed uncomfortable with everyone staring at him.

"This is Daniel Carter," the teacher announced.

Daniel gave a small nod.

"Good morning."

A few students whispered among themselves.

The teacher pointed toward an empty seat.

"Daniel, you can sit there."

The empty seat happened to be directly behind Amara.

Daniel walked over and sat down.

Amara tried not to turn around.

She failed.

When she glanced back, Daniel was already looking at her.

Their eyes met.

Amara immediately looked away.

Tessa noticed.

She leaned toward Amara and whispered, "Interesting."

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Tessa."

"I said nothing."

Amara rolled her eyes and faced the board.

But she couldn't concentrate.

She could feel Daniel sitting behind her.

And somehow, that made the rest of the morning feel different.

At lunch break, Amara and Tessa sat beneath their usual tree near the school garden.

Tessa opened her lunchbox.

"So," she said.

"So what?"

"You haven't said anything about Daniel."

"There is nothing to say."

"You looked at him."

"He looked at me first."

Tessa grinned.

"Even better."

Amara shook her head.

"He's just a new student."

"Sure."

Before Amara could respond, someone approached their table.

It was Jason Miller, one of the most popular boys in their class.

Jason was confident, funny, and always surrounded by friends.

"Hey, Amara."

She looked up.

"Hi."

"Are you coming to the study group after school?"

"I don't know yet."

Jason smiled.

"You should come. We're preparing for the mathematics test."

Tessa immediately noticed the way Jason was looking at Amara.

"She'll come," Tessa answered for her.

Amara frowned.

"I didn't say that."

Jason laughed.

"I'll save you a seat."

He walked away.

Tessa waited until he was out of earshot.

"You know Jason likes you, right?"

Amara sighed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's obvious."

Amara didn't answer.

Across the garden, Daniel stood near the school building with another student.

For some reason, his eyes briefly moved toward them.

Amara noticed.

And this time, she wasn't sure what to think.

After the final bell, students began leaving the classroom.

Amara packed her books slowly.

When she stood up, one of her notebooks slipped from her desk and fell to the floor.

Before she could pick it up, another hand reached for it.

Daniel.

"Here."

"Thanks."

Their fingers almost touched as she took the notebook.

"No problem."

There was an awkward silence.

Then Daniel glanced at the notebook.

"You like drawing?"

Amara looked down.

A small sketch was visible on the page.

"Sometimes."

"It's good."

She smiled.

"Thank you."

Daniel nodded.

"I'll see you tomorrow."

He walked away.

Amara watched him leave.

Tessa appeared beside her.

"Oh."

Amara jumped.

"You scared me!"

Tessa smiled knowingly.

"I saw everything."

"There was nothing to see."

"Of course."

Amara laughed and pushed her friend toward the door.

But as they walked down the corridor, Amara couldn't stop thinking about one thing.

Daniel had only been at Rosewood Academy for one day.

Yet somehow, she already had a feeling that his arrival was going to change everything.

And she had no idea that before the school year ended, friendships would be tested, secrets would come out, and the simple crush she was trying to ignore would become impossible to hide.
