I could treat you better.
Chapter 3
I had packed a few clothes and thrown them into my backpack after Mum convinced my dad to let me go stay with my uncle.
I mean, he didn't immediately agree at the table, but after Mum had done to him God knows what, he finally approved of me going today.
I was actually looking forward to staying with Uncle Nathaniel for a while. Not that I expected my dad to decline when he asked, but when Mum told him, I knew he probably would. He always listened to her.
I'm not some teenage boy who has issues with the way his parents chose to love, because mine loved openly and without care. They were the kind of couple that still looked at each other like they had something to say even after years of being together.
I admired what my parents had. It was really beautiful.
My dad was in his early forties, while my mum was in her late thirties. They had met in secondary school and somehow made everything work. School, their careers, their marriage. Everything.
My parents were quite wealthy too. I could afford whatever new trendy shoe I wanted without having to beg for it, and I knew how lucky I was.
After saying my goodbyes and promising my mum I'd be on my best behavior, my dad just tapped my back.
That was his way of saying goodbye.
I followed Uncle Nathaniel and his fiancée to their black SUV.
Uncle Nathaniel drove, while Naomi sat in the front with him and I sat in the back.
She wore a yellow dress today, and her hair was packed into a ponytail. It was impossible not to notice her when she wore a color that complimented her so well.
Soon, we were driving through the calm roads of Abuja.
We were coming from Kubwa and it took a few hours to get to Lugbe, where my uncle lived. The roads were quieter than I expected, with the occasional car passing us and the warm evening light slowly fading through the windows.
I plugged my headphones in and listened to some calm music.
I must have dozed off somewhere along the way.
.........
I woke up to someone softly tapping my shoulder.
"Hey, we're here."
I heard Naomi's soft voice.
I immediately sat straight, adjusting my hair as I looked around.
Outside the window stood a huge, beautiful house surrounded by a well-kept compound. The tall walls were clean and freshly painted, with a wide black gate at the entrance. There were neatly trimmed plants around the front of the house, and warm lights glowed from the large windows.
The house itself looked expensive.
Actually, it looked more expensive than I had expected.
I stared at it for a few seconds before grabbing my backpack.
I flung it over my shoulder and followed them inside.
The house was enormous.
Even larger than ours.
The interior was just as impressive, with high ceilings, polished floors, huge windows and expensive-looking furniture arranged neatly around the living room. Everything looked so clean that I suddenly became conscious of the dirt on my shoes.
"There are four rooms upstairs. You could have a little tour and pick the one you'd like," Uncle Nathaniel said.
"There's no rush," Naomi added. "You could refresh, then come down for dinner later."
I nodded.
"Okay."
I headed upstairs, but I barely looked at the other rooms before choosing the one on the right.
I didn't really care to see the rest.
This one was good enough.
Actually, I liked it.
The room was spacious, with a large bed, a wardrobe, a small desk by the window and soft curtains hanging over the glass. I dropped my backpack beside the bed before sitting down.
Then I sank back against the mattress and stared up at the ceiling.
