chapter 1
Claimed on My Birthday
The moon was full.
And it was going to kill me.
I pressed my back against the cold stone of the abandoned warehouse, my heart hammering so loud I was sure they could hear it through the walls. Twenty years. That’s all I got.
Today was my 20th birthday.
And according to the old law, today was the day my blood would be spilled.
"She’s here," a voice growled outside. "I smell human."
Three of them. From the Iron Pack. Their eyes glowed gold in the dark, teeth already bared. To wolves, humans like me were nothing. Prey.
I clutched the silver necklace my mother gave me before she died. "Luna," she’d whispered. "Never let them taste your blood. You’re different."
Different. Right.
The door slammed open.
They didn’t expect me to run.
They didn’t expect the ground to shake.
And they definitely didn’t expect _him_.
A blur of black and fury tore through the doorway, throwing the Iron wolves across the room like rag dolls.
He landed in front of me, a wall of muscle and shadow. Tall. Tattoos crawling up his neck. Eyes that burned amber, but not with hunger. With rage.
The Alpha.
"Kael of the Blood Pack," one of the Iron wolves choked out. "This is our hunt. The human belongs to us by law."
Kael didn’t look at them. He looked at me.
And when his eyes met mine, something inside me snapped.
Like a chain I didn’t know was there.
"She doesn’t belong to you," his voice was low, dangerous. It vibrated through my bones. "She belongs to me."
"What?" I whispered.
He stepped closer. I could smell pine, blood, and something wild. His hand came up, but he didn’t touch me. He hovered it over my chest, right where my heart was trying to escape.
"Do you feel that, Luna?" he asked. Only he used my name like he’d known it forever. "That pull? That’s the Blood. Your blood."
My mother’s words echoed: _Never let them taste your blood._
Too late.
Kael leaned down, his forehead almost touching mine. The other wolves were whining now, backing away.
"On your 20th birthday, you were supposed to die," he murmured. "The Council ordered it. I was ordered to kill you."
My breath caught.
"But the Blood chose differently." His thumb brushed my jaw, rough and warm. "The Blood chose me to claim you. As my mate."
The word hit me like ice and fire. _Mate._
Outside, the moon howled.
Inside, my world ended... and began.
"So here’s your choice, little human," Kael said, and for the first time, his cold eyes softened. Just a little. "Run, and every pack in the territory will hunt you.
Or come with me... and rule beside the Alpha of Blood Pack."
I was supposed to be afraid.
But all I felt was the pull.
The blood.
His.
I lifted my chin. "What happens if I say no?"
Kael’s mouth twitched. Not quite a smile.
"Then I’ll chase you anyway."
Chapter 2:
The Blood Pack Territory
The ride was silent.
Kael’s bike tore through the forest, and I was clinging to him like my life depended on it. Maybe it did. His leather jacket smelled like pine and rain and something I couldn’t name. Danger.
I kept my eyes open just to prove I wasn’t scared.
I was terrified.
"Where are you taking me?" I finally shouted over the wind.
Kael didn’t turn. His voice came back to me, low and rough. "Home. Somewhere the Iron Pack can’t touch you."
"And after that?"
"Then you decide." His hand covered mine where it gripped his waist. "Run, or stay."
The trees opened up.
And my jaw dropped.
A compound. Massive. Stone walls, iron gates, wolves everywhere. Some in human form, some not. All of them stopped what they were doing when we rode through.
Staring.
At me.
The human.
A woman with silver hair stepped forward first. Her eyes were cold. "Alpha," she said, voice sharp. "You brought a human into Blood territory."
"Watch your tone, Selene," Kael said. He swung off the bike and pulled me up with him. His hand didn’t let go of mine. "This is Luna. She’s under my protection."
"Protection?" Selene laughed. It wasn’t nice. "The Council ordered her death, Kael. You’re defying them for a girl?"
The word _girl_ made my skin crawl.
Kael stepped in front of me. Just a little. A wall again. "I’m not defying them. The Blood made the choice. Not me."
Murmurs. Whispers. _Blood. Mate. Human._
I felt like an animal in a cage.
Kael looked down at me then, and for a second the Alpha was gone. Just him. "You okay?"
I nodded. Lied.
He led me through the compound. Past training rings. Past wolves sparring. Past eyes that followed every step. We stopped at a cabin on the edge of the property. Away from everyone.
"This is yours," he said, opening the door. "For now."
It was small. Clean. A bed, a fireplace, a window that looked out at the woods. Safe.
I turned to him. "Why are you doing this? You were supposed to kill me."
Kael leaned against the doorframe. Tattoos shifted on his neck. "Because when I touched you, the mark burned." He rolled up his sleeve. A black symbol, like claws, was seared into his skin. "The Blood doesn’t make mistakes, Luna."
"My mother said never let them taste my blood."
"Smart woman." His eyes darkened. "But she didn’t tell you why."
"Tell me."
Kael moved closer. Not touching. Never touching unless I said. "Because your blood doesn’t just belong to wolves. It controls them. Whoever drinks it, whoever claims it... they get stronger. They get the territory. They get power."
My blood went cold. "So I’m a weapon."
"You’re a queen," he corrected. "If you let me."
Outside, a wolf howled. Not from the Iron Pack. From inside.
Kael’s head snapped toward the door. "Stay here. Lock it."
"What is it?"
"Trouble." His amber eyes flashed. "And it’s looking for you."
He was gone before I could answer.
And I was left alone... in the den of wolves.
Chapter 3
Marked But Not Mated
The mark burned.
It wasn’t on my skin. It was under it. Like someone had pressed a hot iron against my collarbone and then whispered, _mine_.
Kael hadn’t kissed me. He hadn’t touched me like that.
He just stood in front of me in the center of the Blood Pack territory, in front of 50 wolves, and said one word:
*"Claimed."*
His Alpha voice rolled through the clearing and sank into my bones.
And then the pain came. Sharp. Fast. Gone.
Now there was a faint black mark curved over my pulse. Like claw marks. Like a brand.
Everyone could see it.
“Take her inside,” Kael ordered. His eyes were gold, not human. “No one touches her.”
The she-wolves stared. Some bared their teeth.
The men nodded and stepped back.
But he didn’t touch me again.
Inside the Alpha house
It smelled like leather, pine, and blood.
“You marked me,” I whispered. My voice shook. “But I didn’t say yes.”
Kael turned from the window. He was huge. All muscle and scars and control.
“That’s the law of blood,” he said. “I claimed you to save you. The Iron Pack wanted your head on a spike by sunrise. This mark tells them you’re under Blood Pack protection.”
“So I’m safe?”
“You’re safe from them.” His jaw ticked. “Not from me.”
I hugged myself. “What does it mean? ‘Claimed but not mated’?”
“It means you wear my protection.” He stepped closer. The room got smaller. “It means every wolf here knows if they hurt you, they answer to me.”
A pause. His gold eyes dropped to the mark on my neck.
“It does NOT mean you’re mine. Not yet.”
My heart did something stupid. “And if I never say yes?”
“Then the mark fades in one moon cycle.” He looked away. “And the law says I have to let you go. To Iron. To death.”
The air left my lungs.
So this was the choice.
Die now. Or choose him later.
Kael reached out but stopped himself an inch from my face. His hand was shaking.
“Don’t look at me like that, Luna. I’m barely holding on.”
“Like what?”
“Like you expect me to be gentle.” He laughed, but it was bitter. “I’m not gentle. I’m Alpha. I take what I need to keep my pack alive. And right now, I need you alive.”
He dropped his hand.
“Rest. Tomorrow, training starts. If you’re going to live in my world, you learn to fight in it.”
He left. The door closed with a thud.
And the mark on my neck pulsed once, like it agreed with him.
Marked. Protected. Not his, yet.
Chapter 4
The Council Wants Her Dead
The next morning came too fast.
I hadn’t slept. The mark on my neck kept pulsing. Every time a wolf walked past the door, it burned hotter.
Like it was warning me.
Kael was already waiting outside. No shirt. Just black pants and scars that told stories I didn’t want to know.
“Training in 10,” he said. No good morning. No look at the mark.
Just that.
Before I could answer, a horn blew. Deep. Ugly.
Kael’s whole body went still. “Council.”
The Council Hall
It was made of stone and bone. 7 old wolves sat on high chairs. Their eyes were milky, but they saw everything.
And in the middle of the floor? Me.
“Luna of no pack,” the oldest one croaked. “The Law of Blood is clear. A human with wolf blood in her veins must be culled before her 18th birthday. She is 18 today.”
Today was my birthday.
Great.
Kael stepped forward. “She’s under Blood Pack protection. I claimed her last night.”
Murmurs. Angry ones.
“You claimed a human?” A female elder stood. “Kael, you know what that does to the packs. The Iron Pack will use this as war. You’ve endangered us all for a girl.”
“I endangered us by following a law that kills children,” Kael snapped. His voice cracked the stone. “She stays.”
“The law is the law,” another said. “If you refuse to give her to us, we remove you as Alpha.”
The whole hall went silent.
Kael looked at me. Just for a second. And in that second I saw it — he would burn everything down before he let them touch me.
“Then remove me,” he said quietly. “Try.”
A growl rolled through the room. Not from him. From me.
It was small. Weak. Human.
But my necklace, my mother’s necklace, got hot against my chest.
The elders flinched.
“The girl is… changing,” one whispered. “The blood is waking.”
Kael’s eyes snapped to my neck. To the mark. It was glowing faint black.
“Meeting dismissed,” Kael said. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me out before anyone could speak again.
Outside
He slammed me against the wall. Not hard. But enough that I gasped.
“Don’t ever growl in front of the Council again,” he hissed. “Don’t ever let them see you weak.”
“I’m not weak,” I shot back. My heart was pounding. “They want me dead, Kael.”
“They want a lot of things.” His forehead dropped to mine. He was shaking. “But you’re marked. You’re mine to protect. And I don’t break promises, Luna.”
The mark burned.
And for the first time, I didn’t pull away.
“Training’s canceled,” he said. “Today you learn how to survive a war.”
Because the Council just declared one.
And it was all because of me.
Chapter 5
Secrets in Her Blood
The necklace was cold against her skin.
Luna had always worn it. Her mother’s last gift before she disappeared 10 years ago. A thin silver chain with a wolf head pendant, eyes made of red stone. Luna thought it was just sentimental.
She was wrong.
It was 2am in the Blood Pack territory. Kael had left her alone in the guest room to "cool off" after the Council meeting. The elders wanted her dead. Kael had stood in front of her and said “Over my dead body.”
Her hands were still shaking.
Luna slipped the necklace off to calm herself. The moment the clasp opened, the red stones flared.
Hot.
Pain shot up her neck like fire. The pendant in her palm began to _hum_. Then it cracked.
From inside the hollow wolf head, something fell out.
Not glass. Not metal.
A drop of blood.
But it wasn’t red. It was silver. And it didn’t hit the floor. It hovered. It drifted toward her chest, right over her heart, and sank into her skin.
Luna screamed.
The mark Kael had given her 2 nights ago the claim mark on her collarbone burned black. Lines spread from it like ink in water, down her arm, across her ribs. Ancient symbols she didn’t know but somehow understood.
The door slammed open.
Kael was there in half a second, shirtless, claws out. “What did you do?”
“I didn’t” Luna gasped. Her vision doubled. She could smell him across the room. Smell the anger, the fear, the wolf under his skin. She could smell _all_ of them. The whole pack.
And deeper. Beneath that.
She could smell _the Iron Pack_. Miles away.
“Her blood,” Kael whispered, staring at the silver fading under her skin. “Gods.”
“What’s happening to me?” Luna choked out.
Kael knelt in front of her, gripping her face. His eyes were gold, not brown. Alpha eyes. “Your mother lied to you, Luna. You’re not human.”
The necklace on the floor turned to dust.
“Your mother was the last Mother Wolf. And her blood... it’s waking up in you.”
Outside, the wolves in the territory all howled at once.
Not in greeting.
In warning.
Because the law said a Mother Wolf could not live.
And the Council was going to find out in the morning.
Chapter 6
Training the Human
Pain was the first thing Luna learned.
“Again.”
Kael’s voice cut through the cold morning air. No sympathy. No Alpha softness. Just command.
Luna hit the dirt. Again. Her ribs screamed. Her marked collarbone throbbed where the silver blood had sunk in last night.
“You’re too slow,” Kael said, circling her. Bare chest. Sweat. Wolf energy rolling off him in waves that made her stomach flip. “The Iron Pack won’t wait for you to get up.”
“I’m not a wolf,” Luna snapped, spitting blood. “I’m not—”
“You are now.” He grabbed her wrist and yanked her up. His thumb brushed over her mark by accident.
Fire.
Luna gasped. Kael froze. His gold eyes dropped to her mouth. For half a second the forest went quiet. Just their breathing.
Then he dropped her hand like it burned him. “Focus.”
Training wasn’t about fighting. Not yet.
It was about surviving _him_.
*Run.* Through the woods until her lungs tore.
*Listen.* To 20 heartbeats in the dark.
*Smell.* Blood, fear, lies.
*Hide.* From him when he hunted her.
By sunset, Luna could dodge 3 of his swipes. By night, she could hear an Iron Pack scout 2 miles out before Kael did.
Progress.
But it was making things worse.
Because the more she trained, the more the silver blood in her woke up.
She could feel Kael now. When he was angry. When he was watching her from the tower. When he couldn’t sleep because the Council was threatening to execute them both.
And he could feel her.
“Stop,” Kael growled on the 4th night, cornering her against a tree. She’d just tackled him. Actually tackled him. “You’re not supposed to be able to do that.”
Luna was straddling him, panting, his hands on her waist to stop her. “Then stop making me.”
His jaw ticked. “The mark is linking us. The Mother Wolf blood. It’s why you’re getting stronger.”
“Is that bad?”
“It’s dangerous.” His voice dropped. “Because if we finish the mate bond, Luna... you won’t just be strong. You’ll be a weapon. And every pack in the country will want you dead. Or owned.”
Luna stared at him. At the Alpha who defied the law for her. “Then don’t let them have me.”
Kael’s hands tightened on her. “I won’t.”
A twig snapped.
Both of them moved. Kael shoved her behind him, claws out.
At the edge of the territory, 3 wolves watched. Not Blood Pack.
Iron Pack scouts.
And one of them was smiling.
“Word travels fast,” the scout called. “The human’s bleeding silver now. The Iron Alpha will pay a lot for that.”
Kael stepped forward. “Touch her and I’ll wear your pelt.”
Luna’s heart was pounding. But this time... she wasn’t scared.
The silver under her skin burned hot.
She could fight.
Chapter 7
The Iron Alpha’s Proposal
The envoys came at dawn.
3 of them. All massive. All Iron Pack. And leading them was _him_.
Alpha Darius.
He was everything Kael wasn’t. Where Kael was sharp and controlled, Darius was big and loud. Scars across his throat. A crown of black iron around his head. And eyes that looked at Luna like she was property.
The entire Blood Pack stood in the clearing. Armed.
Luna stood behind Kael. She wasn’t supposed to be here. But Kael had looked at her and said, “If they want you, they see you.” His hand brushed hers once. Then he let go.
Darius grinned. “So this is the human.”
“Don’t call her that,” Kael said flatly.
“Right. The _Mother Wolf_.” Darius dragged the title out like it tasted bad. “The last one died 200 years ago. Imagine my surprise when we smelled silver blood on the wind.”
Luna’s necklace was gone. But the silver under her skin still itched.
Darius tossed a scroll at Kael’s feet. “The law is clear. Mother Wolves bring war. They bring chaos. The Council agrees.”
“The Council works for me,” Kael said.
“And we work for no one.” Darius stepped closer. 2 guards flanked him. “So here’s our proposal, Blood Alpha. Give us the girl. Unmarked. Unmated. We’ll take her to the Iron mountains. She’ll be safe. And in return? No war.”
The pack murmured.
“No war,” Darius repeated, staring at Luna. “Just one life. For thousands.”
Kael didn’t move. “No.”
Darius laughed. “That’s it? No negotiation?”
“You want to negotiate?” Kael’s voice dropped. It wasn’t loud. It was worse. “Try me.”
“Kael,” one of the elders whispered. “Think of the pack.”
“I am,” Kael said. Then he looked back at Luna. Only her. “I’m thinking of her.”
Something in Luna’s chest cracked. The silver blood pulsed.
Darius noticed. His smile vanished. “She’s marked.”
“Claimed,” Kael corrected. “Not mated. Yet.”
The word _yet_ hit Luna like a punch.
Darius’s eyes went black. “Then we take her now, before you finish it. A Mother Wolf bonded to a Blood Alpha? That’s the end of us.”
He lunged.
Fast.
Kael was faster. He caught Darius’s throat mid-air and slammed him into the ground. The clearing exploded. Wolves shifted. Steel rang.
“RETREAT!” Darius roared, blood on his mouth. “This isn’t over, Kael! You chose her over peace!”
The Iron Pack vanished into the trees.
Silence.
Kael turned. His chest was heaving. Blood on his knuckles. Not his.
He walked straight to Luna. Ignored everyone. Cupped her face with bloody hands. “Are you hurt?”
Luna shook her head. She couldn’t talk.
“Good,” Kael breathed. Then, so only she could hear: “I’d burn every pack in this country before I give you up.”
Behind them, the elder cleared his throat. “Alpha... war is coming now.”
Kael didn’t look away from Luna. “Then let it come.”
Chapter 8
First Shift
It started with the moon.
Luna couldn’t sleep. Not after Darius. Not after Kael’s words: _“I’d burn every pack in this country before I give you up.”_
The silver under her skin hadn’t stopped burning since Chapter 5. Tonight it was worse. Like someone poured molten metal in her veins.
Full moon.
She slipped out of her room. The pack house was quiet. Kael was at the border with half the warriors.
Bad timing.
Halfway to the woods, her knees buckled.
Pain.
Not normal pain. This was bone-deep. Like her skeleton was trying to crawl out of her skin.
“Kael—” she gasped, but he wasn’t there.
Her vision went white. The mark on her collarbone tore open and silver light poured out. The ancient symbols from last night crawled up her neck, across her jaw.
Her bones cracked.
Luna screamed. It didn’t sound human.
Fur. Claws. Her spine arched and she hit the ground, writhing. She could feel it — the wolf inside her. Not like Kael’s wolf. Older. Wilder. _Mother Wolf_.
It had teeth made of moonlight.
The shift took minutes that felt like hours. When it was over, Luna opened her eyes.
And saw the world differently.
Colors were sharper. Sounds were louder. She could smell Kael’s scent on the wind from 5 miles away. And she could smell fear.
She looked down.
She wasn’t human.
She was white. Not gray. Not black. Pure white, with silver running through her fur like veins. And she was _big_. Bigger than the other wolves. Her eyes glowed faint silver in the dark.
A Mother Wolf.
“Gods,” a voice said behind her.
Kael. He must’ve run all the way back. Shirt torn, bleeding from a border fight. He stopped dead when he saw her.
His eyes went wide. Gold to black. “Luna?”
Luna tried to answer. What came out was a low, rumbling growl that shook the trees. Then a howl.
It wasn’t like the other wolves.
It was a command.
Across the territory, every wolf — Blood Pack and Iron scouts alike — dropped to their knees.
Except Kael.
He stepped forward slowly, like she might shatter. “You’re beautiful,” he whispered.
Luna’s wolf snarled. Scared. Confused. The silver blood wanted to run, to fight, to _rule_.
Kael didn’t flinch. He knelt. Exposed his throat. “I’m not afraid of you. Never.”
The wolf in her calmed. Just a little.
Luna shifted back. It hurt less this time. When she was human again, naked and shaking, Kael was already there with his jacket around her shoulders.
“Did it hurt?” he asked, pulling her into his chest.
Luna nodded against him. “I’m not human.”
“No,” Kael said, pressing a kiss to her temple. “You’re more.”
In the distance, another howl answered hers.
Iron Pack.
They’d heard her.
War just got a lot more complicated.
Chapter 9
Jealousy in the Pack
Morning came with whispers.
By noon, the whispers had teeth.
Luna felt it the second she walked into the dining hall. 40 pairs of eyes. All wolf. All staring at the white marks now faintly visible under her skin.
The Mother Wolf.
Kael walked in beside her, still in battle gear from last night. He didn’t touch her. Couldn’t. Not with the whole pack watching. But his presence was a wall at her back.
“She shifted,” someone muttered. “Look at her eyes.”
“She’s not one of us.”
“She’s why Darius declared war.”
Luna kept her head up. The silver blood made her hear everything.
_Human. Mistake. Kill her before the Iron does._
Then Selene stood up.
She-wolf. Kael’s second-in-command. Tall, dark hair, claws already out. She’d trained Luna for 3 days and hated every second of it.
“Alpha,” Selene said, voice sweet and deadly. “A word.”
Kael didn’t sit. “Say it.”
“The pack is scared,” Selene said. “A Mother Wolf means extinction-level war. The elders agree. The law says—”
“The law is dead,” Kael cut her off. “I killed it when I claimed her.”
Selene’s smile dropped. “You claimed a _human_. Now she’s something worse. And you expect us to die for her?”
“I expect you to follow me,” Kael said coldly.
“And if we don’t?”
The room went silent.
That’s when it happened.
Selene moved. Fast. A dagger appeared in her hand — silver, meant for wolves. She lunged for Luna’s throat.
Not to warn. To kill.
Luna didn’t think. The silver in her blood reacted.
She moved.
Caught Selene’s wrist mid-air and _snapped_ it. The crack echoed. Selene screamed.
But Luna wasn’t done. Her eyes flashed silver. Her nails lengthened. The Mother Wolf was right under the surface, furious that someone dared touch what was hers.
“Enough!” Kael roared. He grabbed Luna from behind, hauling her back before she could tear Selene apart. “Stand down!”
Luna was shaking. Breathing hard. She could taste Selene’s blood in the air and it made her wolf want more.
Kael turned her to face him, hands gripping her arms. “Luna. Look at me. Breathe.”
She did. The silver in her eyes faded.
Selene was on the floor, cradling her broken wrist, glaring. “You see? She’s a monster. She’ll turn on us all.”
“No,” Kael said, voice low and final. He stepped in front of Luna, shielding her. “She defended herself. From _you_. Anyone else who tries, I’ll treat as a traitor.”
He looked at the whole pack. “She’s not just claimed. She’s pack. And I will kill anyone who forgets that.”
No one moved.
Later, in Kael’s room, Luna couldn’t stop shaking.
“I almost killed her,” Luna whispered.
“You stopped,” Kael said. He was bandaging her scraped knuckles. Gentle. “That’s what matters.”
“What if I don’t stop next time?”
Kael lifted her chin. “Then I’ll be there to pull you back. Always.”
Outside, another howl cut through the night.
Closer this time.
Iron Pack wasn’t waiting for war anymore.
Got it — let's pick up right where we left off.
Chapter 10: Blood Doesn't lie
The Council hall smelled like old stone and older blood.
I stood in the middle of it in a dress Selene had thrown at me — deep red, too tight, like it was meant to remind everyone what I was. A vessel. Not a person.
Around me, in a high circle, sat the four Alphas.
Stone Pack — a woman with grey hair braided like rope, eyes hard as rock.
Shadow Pack — a man with no scent at all, like he wasn't really there.
Iron Pack — Rhydian. Smiling. Like he already owned me.
And Blood Pack — Kael. Not smiling. His hands were fists on the table.
In the center, an old man with a staff stood up. The Elder.
"Luna Aot," he said. My full name sounded strange in his mouth. "Tomorrow you turn twenty. By the Old Law, your blood becomes claimable. Do you understand?"
I lifted my chin. Kael told me not to show fear. "I understand you're going to talk about me like I'm not here."
A low laugh from Shadow. Rhydian's smile widened.
The Elder didn't smile. "Your mother, Queen Mara of Blood, broke the Pact when she ran with you. Her blood was meant to seal peace. Yours must finish it."
"How?" I asked.
"By mating," he said simply. "Tonight, you will choose an Alpha. Your blood bonded to his pack will make that pack supreme, and the others will bow. If you refuse to choose—"
"We take it by force," Rhydian finished for him. "Old ways. The Rite of Claiming. All unmated Alphas hunt. Whoever catches you, marks you, keeps you."
My stomach dropped. Kael had warned me about this.
"That's barbaric," I whispered.
"That's law," said Stone coldly.
Kael finally stood. "She is already marked. By me."
Gasps around the circle.
Rhydian stood too, fast. "A mark without a mating is nothing! You haven't completed it, Kael. Everyone can smell it — she's still pure. You were too weak to take her."
Kael's eyes flashed gold. "I was strong enough not to force her."
"Enough!" The Elder slammed his staff. The floor cracked. "The mark is noted, but not binding. Luna, the choice is yours tonight. Choose, or we unleash the Rite at dawn on your birthday."
All eyes on me.
Selene, standing behind Kael, mouthed: _Choose him._
But I wasn't looking at her. I was looking at Kael.
He looked... broken. Like he wanted to fight them all, but knew he couldn't win.
"I need time," I said.
"You have until moonrise," the Elder said. "One hour."
---
Kael found me on the balcony, shaking.
"You should choose Rhydian," he said quietly.
I spun around. "What?"
"He's stronger. His pack is bigger. If you choose him, the other packs won't dare start a war. You'll live."
"Live as his prisoner?" I snapped. "He looked at me like I was meat."
Kael stepped closer, his voice cracking. "I can't protect you from all three packs, Luna. If you choose me, they'll invoke the Rite anyway. They'll say I'm too young, too unstable. They'll hunt you, and I'll have to kill them all. I'll die."
"Don't say that."
"It's true." He cupped my face, his thumb wiping a tear I didn't know had fallen. "I marked you because my wolf couldn't help it. But I won't mate you unless you want it. I meant what I said."
Moonrise was coming. The sky was turning purple.
Below us, I could hear wolves gathering. Howling. Waiting for the hunt.
"Kael," I whispered. "What happens if I choose no one?"
"Then at dawn, they hunt you. And I run with you."
"You'd leave your pack?"
He leaned his forehead against mine. "You are my pack."
My heart was beating so fast. The mark on my neck was burning, pulsing with his closeness.
I thought about Lagos. About my small life. About dying human.
Then I looked at him — this Alpha who could have forced me, but didn't.
"Teach me," I said.
"What?"
"Teach me how to run as a wolf. If they're going to hunt me at dawn, I won't run as prey."
Kael stared at me, then slowly smiled — real, fierce, proud.
"My queen," he whispered.
He bit his wrist, letting his blood well up. "Drink. Just a little. Blood calls blood."
I hesitated, then pressed my lips to his wrist.
His blood was hot, metallic, wild. It burned down my throat.
And then — pain. Fire in my bones. My vision went white.
I heard Kael shouting my name, holding me as I fell.
Inside me, something ancient woke up and howled.
*Chapter 11: The First Shift*
Pain has a sound. Mine sounded like breaking glass.
Kael's blood was fire in my veins, tearing me apart from the inside. I was on the cold balcony floor, convulsing, while Kael held my head in his lap and shouted for someone — anyone — to help.
"Get back!" he roared at the guards who ran up. "Don't touch her!"
"Kael—" I gasped. My spine arched. I swear I heard my bones crack. "What's happening to me?"
"Your wolf is waking up," he said, his amber eyes wide with fear and awe. "I didn't think... your mother suppressed it for twenty years with human medicine. My blood broke the seal."
Selene pushed through the guards, her face pale. "You fool! You gave her Blood on Council night? If she shifts now, they'll see her as a threat and kill her on sight!"
"She was going to die anyway!" Kael snapped.
My skin was burning. The mark on my neck — his mark — was glowing so bright it lit up the balcony like a lamp.
"Luna, listen to me," Kael whispered, pressing his forehead to mine. "Don't fight it. Wolves can smell fear. Breathe with me. In... out..."
I tried. But my hands — my hands were changing. My nails lengthened into claws. Dark fur, black as night with red tips, sprouted along my arms.
I screamed.
"It's okay, it's okay," Kael kept whispering, even though his own hands were shaking. "You're doing perfect. Let her come. Let your wolf come."
And then I stopped fighting.
The pain didn't stop, but it changed. It became... power.
I felt her — my wolf. She wasn't scared. She was _angry_. Angry at twenty years in a cage. Angry at Rhydian smiling at me like meat. Angry at the Council talking about my blood like it wasn't mine.
_Let me out,_ she growled in my head. Not words, but feeling.
I let her.
My back arched one last time and then — _crack_ — I was on all fours.
The world exploded into scent and sound.
I could smell Kael — pine and leather and _mate_ — so strong it made my new wolf whine and rub against his leg. I could smell Selene's jealousy, sharp like lemon. I could smell Rhydian from three floors below, iron and rot.
I could hear heartbeats. Dozens of them.
Kael was staring at me, mouth open. Tears in his eyes.
"Luna..." he breathed. "You're... you're beautiful."
I looked down at myself. Paws. Black fur with a red sheen, just like my hair. Bigger than a normal wolf — almost as big as Kael's beast form.
Selene stepped back, hand over her mouth. "By the Goddess... she's not just a Blood. She's a _Royal_."
That's when the doors burst open.
Rhydian and the Elder stood there, drawn by my scream — and my shift.
Rhydian's eyes went wide, then dark with hunger. "She shifted. Early. That means the blood is active _now_. We don't have to wait until dawn."
He started toward me.
Kael moved faster than I'd ever seen. One second he was human, the next a massive black wolf stood between me and Rhydian, snarling, hackles raised.
_Mine,_ his growl said. It vibrated through the stone floor into my paws.
"Stand down, Kael!" the Elder commanded, staff raised. "The Rite—"
"—is at dawn," Kael snarled, shifting back just enough to speak, his body half-man half-beast. "You said moonrise for her choice. The moon hasn't risen yet. You break your own law, and Blood will go to war tonight."
The Elder hesitated. Law was law.
Rhydian was still staring at me, licking his lips. "One hour, then. But after that, little queen..." He looked directly into my wolf eyes. "Run fast."
They left.
I shifted back — clumsy, naked, shaking — and Kael was instantly there with his cloak around me, holding me up.
"Did I... did I do okay?" I whispered, teeth chattering.
Kael laughed, a wet, relieved sound, and pulled me tight against his chest. His heart was hammering as fast as mine.
"You were perfect," he said. "Terrifying. Royal. Mine."
His mark on my neck pulsed in time with his heartbeat.
Above us, the moon began to rise — red as blood.
One hour to choose.
But now I had claws.
*Chapter 12: Moonrise Choice*
The Council hall was different at moonrise.
The red moon shone through the high glass roof and painted everything the color of blood. The four Alphas were already seated. Dozens of wolves lined the walls in human form, watching.
My legs shook as I walked in. Kael's cloak was still around my shoulders — I had refused Selene's red dress. I wore black. My own choice.
The Elder stood. "Luna Aot of Blood. The moon has risen. Choose."
My mouth went dry.
Stone Alpha watched me like I was a problem to be crushed.
Shadow Alpha watched me like I was already dead.
Rhydian watched me like I was dinner.
Kael... Kael wasn't watching me. He was staring at the floor, jaw tight. Like he couldn't bear to watch me choose someone else.
Selene had told me what to do: _Choose Kael, quickly, before Rhydian challenges._
But Kael had told me: _Choose Rhydian, so you live._
My wolf paced inside me, restless. _Choose strength,_ she whispered. _Choose heart._
I stepped forward.
"I choose—"
The doors exploded inward.
Not Kael this time. Wind. Black wind that smelled like smoke and iron.
A woman walked in. Tall. My height. My face.
Older, scarred, but my eyes. My hair, but streaked with grey.
My mother.
Dead for ten years. Buried in Lagos.
"Mara?" The Elder dropped his staff. "Impossible. You died."
"Did I?" My mother's voice was cold. She didn't look at the Council. She looked at me. "Hello, my little moon."
I couldn't breathe. "Mama?"
Selene made a choked sound behind me.
Rhydian stood, furious. "This is a trick! Blood magic!"
"No trick," my mother said. She pulled down the collar of her shirt. On her neck was a faded mark — like mine, but old. "I ran, yes. I hid Luna as human, yes. But I didn't die. Kael's father hid me. Because if the Council knew I was alive, they'd have killed Luna as a baby to prevent this night."
Kael's head snapped up. "My father knew?"
"Your father loved peace more than power," Mara said. "Unlike some."
She turned to the Elder. "You want her to choose an Alpha to make one pack supreme. But you forgot the old law. The _oldest_ law."
The Elder frowned. "What law?"
Mara smiled, and it was terrifying. "A Royal Blood Queen does not _choose_ an Alpha."
She took my hand and raised it high. Our marks — hers faded, mine glowing — pulsed together.
"She _makes_ one."
The hall erupted.
"What is she talking about?" Stone shouted.
Rhydian laughed. "Nonsense!"
But the Elder had gone white. "The First Queen..."
"Yes," Mara said. "The First Blood Queen didn't marry an Alpha. She _turned_ her mate into one. With her blood."
All eyes snapped to Kael.
He understood first. His eyes went wide. "Luna... your blood... you gave me... no, _I_ gave _you_..."
"You gave me your blood to wake me," I whispered, pieces clicking. "But what if... what if mine can change you too?"
Mara nodded. "Drink from your marked mate on the night of the blood moon, and he becomes more than Alpha. He becomes King. Above Council. Above law. No Rite. No hunt."
Rhydian roared and shifted mid-leap, claws aimed at my throat.
"No!"
Kael moved — but I was faster now.
My wolf surged. I didn't fully shift, just let my claws out and my eyes burn gold.
I shoved Kael behind me and met Rhydian's wolf head-on.
I bit his ear and _tore_.
He yelped, stumbling back as human again, blood pouring from his head.
The hall went silent.
I stood panting, blood on my lips — his blood — with Kael staring up at me from the floor.
I held out my wrist to him. My veins glowed red under the blood moon.
"Kael," I said, loud enough for all of them to hear. "Do you trust me?"
He didn't hesitate. Not for a second.
"With my life."
He took my wrist and drank.
Light exploded.
*Chapter 13: The Blood King*
Kael's scream was not human.
The moment my blood hit his tongue, his back arched off the floor. The cloak fell away. Veins of red light crawled up his neck, over his face, into his eyes.
The mark I had given him — no, the mark he had given _me_ — we were mirrors now, both burning.
"Kael!" I tried to pull my wrist back, but his hand locked around it like iron. He wasn't drinking anymore. He was _absorbing_.
Power rolled off him in waves. The stone floor under us cracked. The torches on the walls flickered and died, then reignited with red flame.
Selene was on her knees, head bowed without even meaning to. "Goddess..."
Rhydian, still bleeding from his ear, tried to stand. "Stop this! Elder, stop them!"
The Elder couldn't move. His staff was shaking in his hands. "The prophecy... the King returns..."
My mother stood beside me, her hand on my shoulder, steadying me as I swayed. Giving blood while I was still new to my wolf was draining me fast.
"Enough, Luna," she whispered. "He's taken enough."
I tugged again, and this time Kael let go. His lips were red. His eyes, when they opened —
Not amber anymore. Red. Pure blood red, glowing.
He stood slowly. He was taller. Broader. The air around him felt heavy, like before a storm.
When he spoke, his voice echoed, layered with something ancient.
*"Kneel."*
It wasn't a shout. It was a command in the blood.
Stone Alpha's knees hit the floor first. She fought it, snarling, but her body obeyed.
Shadow Alpha followed, his face expressionless but his body bent.
Rhydian screamed, "I will not bow to a pup!" He lunged.
Kael didn't even shift. He just raised his hand.
Rhydian stopped mid-air, choking, clawing at his throat as if an invisible hand held him.
"You marked her with your eyes, Rhydian," Kael said softly. Dangerously softly. "You called her meat."
"Kael—" I grabbed his arm. "Don't kill him. Not here."
He looked at me, and the red in his eyes softened just a little. Just for me.
He dropped his hand. Rhydian crashed to the floor, gasping.
Kael turned to the Council circle. To the Elder.
"The Rite of Claiming is over," he said. "The Old Law is broken. There is a new law now."
He pulled me to his side, his arm around my waist, holding me up because I was about to faint.
"Luna Aot is my Queen. My mate. My equal. Any pack that hunts her, hunts me. Any Alpha that touches her, answers to the King."
Silence.
Then the Elder — the old man who had spoken of law like it was stone — slowly, painfully, got down on one knee.
"My King," he whispered.
One by one, the hall followed. Even Stone. Even Shadow.
Last was Rhydian, bleeding, shaking with rage. He didn't kneel. He bowed his head, just an inch. It was enough.
My mother squeezed my shoulder. "You did it, my little moon."
Kael looked down at me, and for a moment he wasn't a King. He was just Kael, scared, holding me too tight.
"Luna? Stay with me. Hey—"
The world tilted. The red moon blurred.
The last thing I felt was his mark on my neck, warm and steady, as I fell into darkness in my king's arms.
*Chapter 14: The Mating Night*
I woke to warmth.
Not the cold stone of the Council hall. Furs. A fire crackling somewhere. And Kael's heartbeat under my cheek.
We were in his chambers — the Alpha's room at the top of the Blood House. I knew because I'd been here once before, when I was fifteen and had a fever and Selene had brought me to Kael's father for healing.
Now it was Kael's.
"You fainted," he said quietly, his fingers stroking my hair. "You scared me half to death, and I just became immortal."
I laughed, but it came out weak. "Sorry, my King."
"Don't," he said, suddenly serious. He sat up, pulling me with him so we were face to face. "Don't call me that when it's just us. I'm still Kael."
The red moonlight came through the window and lit up his new eyes. Still red, but softer now. Worried.
"Did I... did it work?" I whispered. "Are you... okay?"
He took my hand and placed it over his heart. It beat strong, steady, but underneath it I felt a new power humming, like a second pulse.
"You made me a King, Luna," he said. "My wolf... she's bigger now. Stronger. But she's calm. For the first time in years, she's calm. Because of you."
His thumb brushed over the mark on my neck. It sent a shiver straight down my spine.
"The mark," he murmured. "It's not finished."
I knew what he meant. He had marked me, I had given him my blood, but we hadn't completed the bond. Not truly.
In wolf law, a mark without mating was a promise. A mating without a mark was just heat.
We were halfway.
"Kael, I..." My voice shook. Not from fear. From everything. "I've never... I'm still..."
"I know," he said quickly. "Luna, we don't have to. Not tonight. Not until—"
I stopped him with my fingers on his lips.
"I'm not saying no," I whispered. "I'm saying... be gentle. Teach me."
His breath hitched.
He leaned in slowly, giving me time to pull away. I didn't.
His kiss was soft at first. Reverent. Like I was something sacred, not just a vessel.
My wolf sighed inside me, content. _Mate. Home. Safe._
He laid me back against the furs, his body careful over mine, his mouth tracing the line of my jaw down to the mark he had left.
"You're sure?" he whispered against my skin.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer.
"I choose you," I said. "Not the Council. Not the law. You."
Outside, the Blood Pack howled at the red moon — not in hunger, but in celebration.
Their King had found his Queen.
And this time, when he marked me again, deeper, I didn't feel pain.
I felt whole.
*Chapter 15: The Queen's Wrath*
I woke to screaming.
Not Kael. He was already gone from the bed, his side cold. The furs were tangled around me and my neck throbbed where he had completed the mark — a dull, sweet ache that made my wolf purr even as alarm bells rang in my head.
"Kael?" I sat up, clutching the sheet.
The door burst open. Selene, hair wild, eyes wide.
"Luna, get up! Iron Pack is attacking the east wall!"
"What? Rhydian bowed last night!"
"He lied!" She threw my black dress at me. "He waited until the King fell asleep. He's not after you anymore — he's after your mother."
My blood went cold. "Mama?"
We ran.
The Blood House was chaos. Wolves fighting in the courtyard below, half-shifted, blood on snow. I could smell iron — Rhydian's pack.
And in the middle of it, Kael.
He wasn't fighting like an Alpha anymore. He fought like a King.
He moved through Iron wolves like a storm, red eyes blazing, his power knocking them back without even touching them. But there were too many.
"Where is she?!" I screamed to Selene over the noise.
Selene pointed to the gate.
Rhydian had my mother by the throat, a silver knife to her neck. Silver — poison to wolves.
"Let her go!" I shifted mid-run, my clothes tearing, and landed on all fours as my black-red wolf.
Rhydian smiled. "There's my little queen. Come to trade? Yourself for mommy?"
Kael appeared beside me in wolf form, massive, his fur now streaked with red just like mine. His growl shook the ground.
_Don't,_ he warned me in our new mind-link. Our bond was complete — I could hear him clear as voice. _It's a trap. Silver will kill her anyway if you get close._
_She's my mother!_ I snarled back.
Mara's eyes met mine. She wasn't scared. She mouthed something: _I'm sorry._
Then she did something I will never forget.
She grabbed Rhydian's silver knife with her bare hand and drove it into her own chest.
"No!" I howled.
Rhydian stumbled back, shocked, releasing her.
Mama fell.
I shifted back to human, not caring I was naked, and caught her. Kael threw his cloak over us both as he shifted back too, roaring for the healers.
"Mama, no, no, stay with me—"
She smiled up at me, blood on her lips. "I already died once for you, my little moon. I can do it again."
"Don't say that!"
"Listen," she gasped, gripping my hand with surprising strength. "Rhydian... he knows... Selene..."
Her eyes flicked to Selene, who stood frozen.
"What about Selene?" I asked.
But Mama's hand went limp.
Her heart stopped.
For a second, there was no sound. No battle. No wind.
Then my wolf rose up inside me, bigger than ever, fueled by grief.
I laid my mother down gently. Stood up. Kael tried to hold me back.
"Luna—"
I looked at Rhydian.
And I let the Queen out.
*Chapter 16: Blood For Blood*
I didn't shift.
I didn't need to.
The power that had made Kael a King was mine too — I was the source. And grief made it wild.
The snow around my feet melted. The red moon was gone — it was dawn — but my eyes burned gold-red anyway.
Rhydian took a step back. "Stay back, girl."
"Girl?" My voice didn't sound like mine. It sounded like two voices — mine and my wolf's. "You killed my mother. Twice."
Kael was beside me, his hand on my lower back. Not holding me back. Lending me strength. Through our bond I felt his rage matching mine, steadying it.
_Together,_ he thought to me.
_Together,_ I agreed.
I raised my hand, the way Kael had done last night.
Rhydian choked. He clawed at his throat, feet leaving the ground.
"You wanted my blood, Rhydian?" I whispered. "Come and take it."
Selene screamed, "Luna, stop! If you kill an Alpha without trial, the other packs will—"
"Let them come," I said.
Rhydian's face was turning purple. Behind him, his Iron wolves whimpered and bowed their heads — they could feel a Queen's command in their bones.
Kael leaned close to my ear. "He doesn't deserve a quick death. Make him answer."
I loosened my grip just enough for Rhydian to gasp.
"Why?" I demanded. "Why my mother?"
Rhydian laughed, wet and bloody. "Because she knew... what your little sister did."
My heart stopped. "Sister?"
All eyes turned to Selene.
She was crying now, shaking her head. "Luna, I can explain—"
"You told him where we were!" I said, pieces slamming together. Mama's last words: _Selene..._ "In Lagos! It was you! You told Iron Pack where Mama was hiding us!"
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!" Selene fell to her knees. "I was fifteen! Rhydian promised he'd only take your mother back to the Council, not kill her! I was jealous! You were the Royal, you were always the special one, and I was just... the spare!"
Kael growled. "You betrayed Blood."
"I was a child!" she sobbed.
I looked at my best friend. My sister. The girl who braided my hair and taught me to fight.
"You let my mother die," I said quietly. "And then you watched me grieve for ten years and said nothing."
Rhydian used my distraction to shift and lunge.
He never reached me.
Kael intercepted him mid-air, now in his King wolf form — twice Rhydian's size, black fur with glowing red streaks.
One bite. One shake.
It was over.
Kael dropped Rhydian's body at my feet and shifted back, blood on his mouth, his red eyes on me. Waiting for my judgment on Selene.
Selene crawled toward me. "Please. Luna. Sister."
My mother's body lay cold behind me. My mate stood bloody beside me.
I was twenty years old today. A Queen. A widow's daughter.
I made my first decree.
"Selene of Blood," I said, my voice steady though tears ran down my face. "For betraying the Royal blood, I exile you."
She sobbed in relief — exile, not death.
"To Iron Pack," I finished. "You wanted to be special? You can lead the pack you sold us to. Their Alpha is dead. Take his place. And never set foot on Blood land again."
Selene stared at me, horrified. A mercy that was also a punishment.
Kael pulled me into his arms as Iron wolves dragged Rhydian's body away and Selene was led to the gates.
I buried my face in his chest and finally let myself cry.
"Happy birthday, my Queen," he whispered into my hair.
