WUCE IN THE FORBIDDEN HIGHLAND

WUCE IN THE FORBIDDEN HIGHLAND

Wuce was a courageous and inquisitive little boy who lived in a small village amidst lush forests, scenic streams and towering mountains. There was one hill around the village that everybody was afraid of. It was referred to as the Forbidden Highland.

The elders had told the villagers that they should never go into the highland. They said that odd things were going on there. Birds left and strange noises were heard in the caves and those who ventured too deep in the hills were said to become lost. As a result of these tales, none of the people dared enter that place.

But Wuce wasn't happy with stories. He puzzled over why the highland was off limits.

On one afternoon after coming down from the farm, Wuce witnessed something that was glowing in the sky on top of the hill. It appeared as if a huge stone reflecting a golden light. His curiosity mounted further.

“It must be important,” he thought to himself.

The next day, Wuce packed up some food, water, a small torch and a walking stick. He started his way to the Forbidden Highland, without any one knowing.

As he went higher, the wood was more gloomy and silent. There were strange birds in the trees and dry leaves under his feet. Then, suddenly he heard a loud voice.

“Wuce! Go back!

He stopped immediately.

“How you know my name here?” he asked.

He was frightened, but he had the courage in his heart and he did not stop walking.

After a few minutes he found an old track choked with weeds. He continued it until he came to a big cave. There were weird drawings of people, animals and the sun at the entrance.

Wuce entered carefully.

He then discovered an old stone box in the cave, covered with dust. He was nervous as he opened it. He did not find gold, but an old book, a map, and some farming tools.

Suddenly, an old man appeared behind him.

“Why are you here young man?” he asked.

However, Wuce was frightened but replied honestly.

I wished to find out why this hill is prohibited.

The old man smiled.

Many years ago, this highland was a great place, with beautiful trees and lovely streams; the people who lived here used to come to eat from it and drink water from it; but some men grew greedy for gold; they felled the trees, polluted the streams, and harmed the land; and when they went away, the elders said, "O ye lands that we have seen, forbid the hill, for it is great and has been harmed.

The old man gave the book to Wuce.

It holds the history of your people; the true gold on this hill is the knowledge that will enable your village to survive.”

Now Wuce knew the reason why the elders had guarded the place.

He then said thank you to the old man and carefully came back to the village. On seeing his mother, he was happy, but upset that he had gone to the proscribed highland.

Wuce summoned the elders and explained to them everything that he had learned. Initially they were amazed. Then they realized that the time had come to reveal the truth to the younger generation.

All the villagers went back together to the hill land. They swept the streams, planted trees and saved the caves. The old book educated them on the better ways of farming and taking care of their environment.

The Forbidden Highland no longer was a place of fear from this day onwards. It became a source of learning, history and hope.

Wuce was now loved all over the village. Everyone in his adventure learned a valuable lesson: Courage is not merely facing danger, it is the wisdom to learn from the past and secure a better future.
