The Things Time Left Behind
Sometimes I miss a life
I didn't know I was living.
I miss the days
when afternoons felt longer,
when the sun stayed a little softer,
and happiness didn't need a reason.
Back then,
we never called them memories.
They were just ordinary days.
A familiar voice calling my name
from another room.
The sound of laughter
coming from the kitchen.
Bare feet on cold floors.
The smell of food cooking
while someone complained
that we were taking too long to come and eat.
I didn't know
I would one day miss those things.
I thought they would always be there.
Funny how life works.
We spend so much time
waiting for the next thing
that we forget to notice
the thing we are currently living.
I miss old conversations.
The ones that went nowhere
but somehow meant everything.
Sitting beside someone
and talking about absolutely nothing
until the night became morning.
I miss friendships
that once felt permanent.
People whose names
used to appear on my phone every day
but now feel strange
when I see them.
People I once knew so well
that I could tell what was wrong
just by the way they said hello.
Now, we might pass each other
and only exchange a smile.
And somehow,
that smile carries years
of everything we used to be.
I miss the old versions of myself too.
The girl who laughed without thinking
about how she looked.
The girl who believed
that most things could be fixed
with enough time and enough love.
The girl who made plans
without worrying about everything
that could go wrong.
I wish I could sit beside her
for just five minutes.
I would tell her,
βDon't rush.β
Enjoy the silly moments.
Take more pictures.
Stay outside a little longer.
Call your friends back.
Tell people you love them
while they are still close enough to hear it.
Because one day,
you will look back
and realize that the life
you thought was ordinary
was actually something beautiful.
Sometimes nostalgia arrives quietly.
A song plays
and suddenly I'm somewhere else.
A certain smell
takes me back to a room
I haven't seen in years.
A photograph
makes me remember a face
I haven't thought about in months.
And for a few seconds,
the past feels close enough to touch.
Then the moment passes.
The song ends.
The photograph goes back into the drawer.
And I'm here again,
in the present,
trying to accept
that some places only exist
inside our memories now.
Maybe that's what growing up is.
Not just becoming older,
but slowly collecting things
you can never return to.
Old homes.
Old friendships.
Old conversations.
Old dreams.
Old versions of yourself.
And still,
I don't think nostalgia is sadness alone.
There is something beautiful
about missing something
that once made you happy.
It means it mattered.
It means there was a time
when your heart felt full enough
to create a memory worth keeping.
So I won't be angry
that those days are gone.
I'll keep them somewhere safe.
In old photographs.
In familiar songs.
In the smell of rain.
In the sound of someone's laughter.
In the quiet moments
when I suddenly remember
who I used to be.
And maybe that's enough.
Maybe the past isn't asking us
to return.
Maybe it only wants us
to remember.
To pause sometimes
and whisper,
βI remember whenβ¦β
Then smile,
even if your eyes
fill with tears.
Because some moments
were never meant to last forever.
They were simply meant
to become memories.
