Motivation can be strong but can't always be counted on. There are some days when you are feeling excited, confident and ready to conquer your goals, and others when you aren't. On other days, you might feel tired, discouraged, distracted or just plain bored. From here on, discipline takes precedence over motivation. Motivation can begin the journey and discipline can keep you on the road.
To discipline is to do what you must do when you don't feel like doing it. It's being able to stick to your objectives even though things get tough, there's a distraction or you hit a snag. A disciplined person does not wait for the mood to go to him. They know that consistency is needed for progress.
Lots of people have dreams, terrific concepts and powerful goals, however dreams without actions are just dreams. You can get motivated to become successful, but if you don't have the discipline, that motivation can go away when you hit a road block. Discipline will enable you to persevere when things get tough.
Think of a student who would like to get excellent results. Motivation can help the student to study at the start of the semester, but discipline is what helps the student to continue reading, attending classes, doing assignments and preparing for exams when there is distraction. The same is true for business, career, relationships, personal development and spiritual growth.
Discipline is the lesson of patience too. It takes time for success to occur. In some instances it might take months or even years to achieve results, despite your efforts. If discipline is lacking you can feel demoralized and you can quit. However, discipline helps you to remember that doing the small things over and over again can add up to big things.
Another big advantage of discipline is it improves self-control. There will always be other things that are trying to distract you. There are many activities that can take up your time, including socializing, entertainment, unnecessary conversations, procrastination and more, that can be done on social media. Discipline allows you to determine what is important and what isn't.
An idea of discipline is not perfection. We all have our bad days and slip ups. The important thing is the commitment to do it and get back on the same path. Do not let one day go by without doing something right, or it will become a habit. Continue to try again and make progress.
Create discipline by making small commitments. Establish a sensible routine and stick to it. Plan ahead, organize your time well, avoid distractions and keep yourself accountable. Most importantly, be able to honor your own promises.
Keep in mind that Motivation is a short-term solution, Discipline is a long-term remedy. Motivation can say to you, “You can do this!” Discipline tells you to do it anyway. Motivation can be what makes you want to start, but discipline can be what makes you stick.
Your future isn't just going to be a reflection of what you want to do now. It will be formed by the things you do on a regular basis. If you have no motivation, use discipline. In times of difficulties, stay steadfast. If progress is slow, persevere!
The process of discipline will not always be easy, but it will prepare you for success, make you wiser, and make you stronger. Be disciplined, consistent, stick to the process and proceed. What you wish to accomplish could be just around the corner literally of the discipline you're currently practicing.
