There are lots of options in life. Every day we decide whom to become, where to go, with whom to associate, the values that we shall live by. Our circumstances may impact on our journey, but our choices still matter. Everyone must take responsibility for the direction of his/her life.
God has given man the choice. We can select wisdom or folly, righteousness or unrighteousness, discipline or laziness, forgiveness or bitterness, obedience or rebellion. We can't control what happens to us but we can control how we react.
Today's decisions can determine who we are tomorrow! Small decisions are small decisions, but they become habits and habits can form our character and our future.
Having choices, however, does not imply that there are no consequences. There can be no separation between freedom and responsibility. In selecting a specific course, we also need to be ready for the consequences that follow.
The Bible teaches about this in Galatians 6:7: “A man reaps what he sows.” The message we send out in our words, actions, attitudes, and decision will "grow" a harvest in our lives. This is why we shouldn't be reckless about our actions or think that they don't matter.
There is also a second fact: Judgment is not according to money, status, family, popularity, or social standing. There is no favoritism in God's judgment. There is no favouritism with God, not according to Romans 2:11.
Wealthy and poor are on equal standing before God. The choices are equally the responsibility of a well-known and a not-so-known person. Human beings can judge based on appearances; on influence, or on position, but God's judgment is not influenced by these.
That should bring us to the need to live in a decent manner. While you can present a certain image to others, impress them, and even lie to friends, God remains outside the illusion. He understands our motives and knows our heart.
So, it is not their duty to compare their lives with others. Others' paths may appear easier, but they must be yours to choose! It is your duty to make the most of the opportunities, abilities and circumstances God has given you to live faithfully.
For those who have made mistakes in the past – Don't let the past dictate your future. You can look back and ask for forgiveness, acknowledge your mistakes and make different decisions. God provides us with grace and a chance for change but it is up to us if we want to respond.
Everyone will be held accountable for his/her life one day. That day will be no day for new beginnings and it will not be the day of the person who had the greatest house, the most money, the highest position or the most followers. It will be our actions and decisions that will matter.
Therefore, take care in selecting your way. Never do something because of others, for fun or to fit in with others. Do what is right, seek wisdom, live in truth, and have your heart in tune with God.
It's your choice to make, but be aware that you have to make a choice and there are consequences. But at the judgment when he comes, there will be no mercy.
Make the right decisions today and you won't regret them tomorrow as they will contribute to the story you will be telling tomorrow.
