Writer's Block
There are days all you want to do is scribble down your emotions but the ability to communicate them just doesn't flow, try as you might. It could stretch for days, weeks, and months and sometimes it gets really overwhelming because it makes you question your superpower (your ability to write comprehensively)–“your ability to write comprehensively” because most ideas, words or phrases you manage to cough out does not align and makes you more unsettled and dissatisfied.
I came across a post where Lecrae, a Christian hip-hop rapper shared his opinion about writer's block. To him, he felt that there's no such thing as that because you can try going out on vacations, visitations, socialize with people and put your experience– even the writer's block issue into writing. I humbly disagreed with him instantly, and that's because I have attempted doing that, but still there'll be that voidness, that blankness, that vagueness, and anybody that is conversant with your superpower might doubt that it was you who wrote that piece because of how bland it would look during that period. In fact, I won't be exaggerating if I say that I experience severe headache during such periods–if I try to force out my superpower. People's experience might differ, so I respect his point of view nevertheless.
But there's a beautiful thing I've experienced overtime; once you get over that phase of nothingness, inspirations begin to deluge from different quarters, you begin to find ideas from random insignificant occurrences, your vocabularies begin to swirl once again, your ink flows better and your superpower feels rejuvenated. All of a sudden, you feel like composing a whole encyclopedia.
Well, there might be scientific reasons behind writer's block, but one thing that amazes me is how one moves from a point of emptiness to a phase of overflow, and I would love to liken this occurrence to the stages of life we sometimes come across. This moment, our efforts seem futile try as we might to hit the goals we have set, try as we might to attain certain height, try as we might to bag certain milestones, we get little or nothing to show for it. This particular season is overwhelming especially when you keep showing up, you keep hoping the next attempt would amount to something good, all you get is a resounding silence or a rejection and at a point, the only option left is to give up.
Personally, this has been my experience, I have engaged in numerous poetry contests where I confidently pour in my heart's content, where I confidently showcase my abilities to play with words figuratively, but I end up not making it even to the long list, try as I might.
But just like the aftermath of writer's block, a day would come where years of resolve and tireless efforts would yield manifold results that would flabbergast one.
So, here's to continuous mining and holding on till we hit the gold beneath. Everything might seem bleak now, but at the end of it all, there is a brighter side.
