The Strange Feeling of Being Alive

Sometimes, I wonder if anyone else finds it strange that we are all living for the first time, yet somehow expected to know what we are doing.

We wake up, wash our faces, answer messages, laugh at jokes, worry about money, make plans for tomorrow, and repeat the same little routines until the days begin to look alike. Somewhere between Monday and Sunday, we grow older. Our childhood becomes a story we tell, and the people we once thought would stay forever slowly become memories we occasionally visit.

And somehow, we call this normal.

Perhaps the strangest thing about being human is how quickly we learn to live with things we never truly understand.

We learn to say, "I'm fine," even when our minds feel like rooms with too many open windows. We learn to smile at people while carrying thoughts we cannot explain, not because we are dishonest, but because explaining ourselves sometimes requires an energy we simply do not have.

Have you ever been surrounded by people, laughing and participating in conversations, only to return home and feel an unfamiliar sadness? Nothing terrible happened. Nobody hurt you. You are not necessarily unhappy. You just feel the quiet weight of being a person who thinks too much and understands too little.

I wonder if that feeling is loneliness, or if it is simply the moment we become aware of our own existence.

After all, nobody can completely enter another person's mind. We can love someone for years and still misunderstand the things that keep them awake at night. We can share a bed, a meal, a childhood, even a lifetime, and there will always be a small room inside each of us that nobody else has the key to.

Perhaps that is why we keep talking. We are all trying to prove that somebody, somewhere, understands.

And then there is time.

We spend our younger years wishing to become older, believing adulthood holds the answers. When we finally arrive, we discover that grown-ups are mostly children who have learned how to pay bills, hide their confusion, and make decisions while secretly hoping they are making the right ones.

We keep waiting for the moment when life will finally make sense.

Maybe it never does.

Maybe growing up is not about understanding everything. Maybe it is about becoming comfortable with the fact that some questions will follow us for years without offering anything in return.

Why do ordinary evenings sometimes feel more meaningful than important celebrations? Why do we remember the smell of a room we visited years ago but forget entire conversations from yesterday? Why can one sentence stay with us for a decade while a hundred compliments disappear by morning?

Perhaps the human mind is not designed to preserve everything. Perhaps it keeps the things that touched something we cannot name.

I think we are all searching for meaning in different disguises. Some call it success. Others call it love, faith, money, freedom, or the simple desire to be remembered kindly.

But on certain evenings, I suspect meaning is much smaller than we imagine.

Perhaps it is having someone to tell a pointless story to. Perhaps it is laughing unexpectedly after a difficult day. Perhaps it is looking at the sky and, for a brief moment, forgetting that you were worried about anything at all.

Life remains strange. We are temporary people building permanent-looking plans, loving things we cannot keep, and searching for answers in a world that rarely explains itself.

Still, tomorrow morning, most of us will wake up and try again.

And perhaps that, too, is a kind of philosophy.
