THE WORST FIRST IMPRESSION

Chapter Two

The moment the lecturer dismissed the class, Amara packed her things as quickly as possible.

Finally.

She stood up.

Then someone stepped in front of her.

She looked up.

Adrian.

Oh, come on.

He was holding his notebook in one hand, looking completely unbothered.

“You're blocking the way,” Amara said.

“There are people behind me.”

“And?”

“And you're going to have to wait.”

Amara stared at him.

Who raised this man? A pack of wolves?

She crossed her arms.

“Do you always talk to people like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you're doing them a favor by breathing the same air.”

A couple of students nearby laughed.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

“You talk too much.”

Amara smiled.

“And you don't talk enough. Together, we're balanced.”

He gave her a strange look before finally stepping aside.

Amara walked past him.

Victory.

She made it three steps before hearing his voice behind her.

“You forgot this.”

She turned.

He was holding one of her pens.

“Oh.”

She walked back and took it.

“Thanks.”

“You're welcome.”

She paused.

Was that almost… polite?

She looked at him suspiciously.

“Are you feeling okay?”

His eyebrow rose.

“Why?”

“You just said you're welcome.”

He stared at her.

Then, surprisingly, he laughed quietly.

It lasted barely a second.

But Amara noticed.

Wait.

She hadn't expected that.

He actually knows how to smile.

Before she could say anything, a girl called from across the hallway.

“Adrian!”

He turned.

The girl walked toward them, smiling.

“You disappeared after class yesterday. I was looking for you.”

Adrian's expression immediately became serious again.

“I was busy.”

“With what?”

“Things.”

The girl rolled her eyes.

“You're impossible.”

She glanced at Amara.

“And who's she?”

Amara opened her mouth.

But Adrian answered first.

“Nobody.”

Amara's smile disappeared.

Nobody?

She looked at him.

For some reason, those two words annoyed her more than they should have.

She shoved her pen into her bag.

“Don't worry,” she said. “I'm very comfortable being nobody.”

Then she walked away.

Why did that bother me?

She shook her head.

Forget him.

She headed toward the cafeteria.

Five minutes later, she stopped.

Because sitting at a table near the window was Adrian.

You're kidding.

She looked around.

There were plenty of other tables.

Fine. I can eat somewhere else.

She turned around.

Then her stomach growled loudly.

Amara sighed.

Okay. My stomach has chosen violence.

She walked toward an empty table.

Unfortunately, it was directly across from Adrian.

He looked up.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Amara slowly sat down.

This university is starting to feel very small.

Adrian returned to his food.

For several minutes, there was silence.

Then he said, without looking up,

“You're staring.”

Amara nearly choked.

“I wasn't.”

“You were.”

“I was looking at the wall.”

“The wall is behind me.”

Amara glanced at the wall.

Then back at him.

“Maybe I like the view.”

He finally looked up.

She smiled innocently.

Got you.

But instead of getting angry, Adrian simply shook his head.

“You're strange.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn't a compliment.”

“I accepted it as one.”

For the first time, Adrian smiled properly.

And Amara realized something she probably shouldn't have.

She was beginning to enjoy annoying him.

That was dangerous.

Because Adrian Blake wasn't just arrogant.

There was something about him that Amara couldn't figure out.

And she had a feeling she was going to find out sooner than she expected.
