BETRAYAL AND THE KING'S JUDGEMENT

Its broad, thick limbs stretched like a mother's arms, and the coconut tree grew robust. In due course, it yielded large, healthy coconuts that Osarugue could use to make money. Every market day, she would bring the coconuts to Ekenwan Market, and she rapidly became the subject of all conversation in the community. Since her coconuts were the only ones in Ekenwan village that appeared fresh and juicy, everyone hurried to purchase from her. She was no longer battling as much as she had been. She could now buy excellent food, fashionable clothing, and even little extravagances. She never forgot Efosa, the one who had helped her protect the tree from the hands of wicked goats, most importantly. Efosa often received a sizable portion of the money Osarugue made from her daily sales every time she came back from the market. She ensured that her friend lacked nothing. Efosa didn't bother going to the market anymore since Osarugue had given her everything she needed.

This one act was motivated solely by appreciation. But as Osarugue's riches increased, so did Efosa's heart. Efosa was delighted at first. She was well dressed, ate well, and didn't need to put herself under any pressure. However, after a bit, a harsh feeling started to emerge inside her. She began to question herself in a very serious way: "Why is it that Osarugue is the only one with money? Her compound has the coconut tree that used to bring her money, but wasn't I the one who brought the drum to protect it? Without me, that tree would not have survived today. Then why should she be the only rich one here?" she said quietly to herself.

Like a quiet thief in the night, jealousy gradually entered Efosa's heart. Even if Osarugue gave her some money, she was never content. No amount ever sufficed. Then, with a different plan in mind, Efosa came to see Osarugue one night.

She sat down, rubbing her hands together and acting as though she was in pain. "Osarugue, my friend, please, I need some money urgently. I want to travel. It's very important," she said, her voice sharp. "My sister, I don't have any money right now," Osarugue stated, scanning up and down as she counted her money after returning from the market. Please wait until I return from the market tomorrow, my sister. This money I'm counting is for someone I've owed for a long time, and I vowed to the person that I would give it to them today. She explained softly. Straightening up, Efosa. She became enraged and her eyes grew darker. She admitted, "This is the moment I've been waiting for," her voice trembling. "I don't care!" Efosa screamed. "I want my drum back! Give it to me now!" Osarugue shook her head and let out a deep sigh. "Efosa, this is unfair..." Efösa, however, turned and left her compound before she could complete. With rage in her heart, Efosa walked directly to the Oba palace. She knelt before and greeted the Oba of Ekenwan upon her arrival. With a phony sad voice, she stated, "Your Majesty, may you live a long life! I've come to report someone." The Oba lowered his gaze toward her after adjusting his regal beads. 'My daughter, who has wronged you?' 'It's Osarugue, my buddy!' Cried Efosa. She borrowed my drum four years ago, and now she won't give it back! She told me I should go ahead and report to you, and she said you can't do anything to her! Efosa fibbed. Oba's eyes grew larger. His voice roared across the castle as he scowled. 'Your pal must be ungrateful! Does she believe herself to be above the throne? I will take care of her; don't worry!' His messengers materialized after the Oba clapped his hands twice. The monarch commanded, 'Go to Osarugue's compound!' 'Reduce the coconut tree and return the drum to Efosa! Furthermore, bring Osarugue here right away!' The messengers followed instructions. When Osarugue heard loud noises outside, she was within her home.

The Oba's envoys had already encircled her coconut tree before she had a chance to depart. In surprise, she went ahead. She cried, 'What's going on?!' She was turned to by one of the messengers. He declared, "By order of the monarch, we are requested to chop down this coconut tree!" Osarugue stopped. The axes struck the tree before she could speak anything further. Osarugue felt like her heart was being hacked into pieces with each stroke. She screamed, "Nooooooooo!" "Please don't do this! That tree is my entire life! It is all that I possess!" But she was not heard. The powerful coconut tree that had lifted her out of poverty vanished in the blink of an eye. With a little smile on her face, Efosa stood on the side of the road, watching as the drum was taken out and handed to her. Osarugue fell to the ground, tears streaming down her face. Then, before she could even grasp her loss, the messengers grabbed her by the arms and pulled her to the palace. Would the king pay attention to her account of what transpired? Or was this Osarugue's final day? CONTINUED...
