Letters to My Friend π€
23: The Goodbyes We Never Said
Dear Friend,
I don't think we talk enough about unfinished goodbyes.
The ones without a final conversation.
No last hug.
No perfect explanation.
No moment where both people sit down and say everything that needed to be said.
Just...
distance.
And then one day, you realise you've become strangers to something or someone you once knew by heart.
Sometimes, it's a person.
Sometimes a relationship.
Sometimes, it's a dream you spent years believing would happen.
Sometimes, it's a place, a season, or even a version of yourself you thought you'd be forever.
And perhaps the hardest part isn't always losing it.
It's accepting that you may never get the ending you imagined.
We want closure to look like a conversation.
An explanation.
An apology.
A final, βI understand now.β
We want someone to acknowledge the hurt. We want the questions answered. We want to know why things changed, why they left, why the door closed, or why God allowed something we prayed so hard for to slip away.
But sometimes, closure is quieter.
Sometimes, it is waking up one morning and realising you no longer need an answer to move forward.
You simply...
let God hold the unanswered questions.
Because not every chapter will end with a period.
Some end with an ellipsis...
...
And perhaps that's okay.
David never got to build the temple he dreamed of building.
Moses saw the Promised Land but didn't enter it.
Paul carried unanswered prayers.
Yet their stories were not failures.
Their lives still mattered. Their obedience still mattered. Their works matters. Their stories still became part of something bigger than what they could see.
Maybe a life doesn't have to end the way you imagined for God to call it beautiful.
Maybe that relationship ending doesn't mean you were foolish for loving.
Maybe that dream changing doesn't mean you wasted your time.
Maybe becoming someone different doesn't mean you lost yourself.
Perhaps some things were only meant to accompany you for a chapter, not the whole book.
So, dear friend,
if there is something you're still grieving because you never got to say goodbye properly...
Give it to God.
You don't have to rewrite the past.
You don't have to force an ending.
You don't have to chase someone for the closure they may never give you.
And you don't have to understand everything tonight.
You can simply breathe.
Pray.
Cry if you need to.
Then keep walking.
There is still life beyond the chapter you couldn't finish.
And perhaps one day, you'll look back and realise:
God was writing even in the spaces where you thought the story had stopped.
What felt like an ending may have simply been a place where He began writing differently.
βHe hath made every thing beautiful in his time...βEcclesiastes 3:11 (KJV)
Reflection πΏ
What unfinished goodbye are you still carrying in your heart?
And what would it look like to finally place it in God's hands?
