My future self called yesterday.
I almost didn't answer.
The number was strange,
the voice unfamiliar,
but something inside me whispered,
Pick up.
So I did.
There was silence
for three seconds.
Then a voice said,
“It's me.”
I laughed.
“That's impossible.”
“I know,” she said.
“That's why I only have
five minutes.”
I sat down.
Suddenly,
I wanted to ask
a thousand questions.
Did we make it?
Did the dream happen?
Did the money come?
Did they finally recognize
what we were capable of?
But she interrupted.
“Stop asking about them.”
I became quiet.
She continued,
“You spent too much time
wondering who would believe in you.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“You kept waiting
for permission,” she said.
“For the perfect moment.
The perfect plan.
The perfect version of yourself.”
I whispered,
“Did we fail?”
She laughed softly.
“Many times.”
“Then how did we get here?”
“You kept going.”
That answer
was almost disappointing.
I wanted something dramatic.
A secret.
A shortcut.
A miracle.
Instead,
she gave me the truth:
“We became successful
at surviving our own excuses.”
I looked at the clock.
“Are we happy?”
There was a long silence.
Then she said,
“We learned that happiness
isn't a permanent address.”
She told me
there were beautiful days
and terrible ones.
People we loved
who left.
Doors we thought
would never open.
Opportunities
we were terrified to take.
Dreams that changed shape.
And versions of ourselves
we had to say goodbye to.
Then she said something
I will never forget:
“Please stop being embarrassed
by how long it takes.”
I closed my eyes.
She continued,
“You are not late.
You are learning
how to arrive
as yourself.”
The call began to fade.
“Wait!” I shouted.
“One more question.”
“What?”
“Are you proud of me?”
She laughed.
“I'm proud that
you finally became
someone you don't need
to escape from.”
Then the line went dead.
I stared at my phone
for a very long time.
Nothing had changed.
The bills were still there.
The unanswered messages.
The unfinished plans.
The uncertain future.
But somehow,
I stood up differently.
Because somewhere ahead of me
was a version of myself
who had survived
everything I was afraid of.
And for the first time,
I wasn't trying
to become someone else.
I was simply walking
toward her.
