Should Politicians Be Judged by Their Promises or Their Track Record?

During election campaigns, politicians make many promises. They promise better roads, improved education, more employment opportunities, stronger security, better healthcare and improved living conditions. These promises often become powerful tools for attracting the attention and support of voters.

But after the election, an important question arises: Should citizens judge a politician mainly by the promises they make, or by what they have actually achieved?

This is a debate that deserves serious attention.

The Importance of Political Promises

Promises are an important part of every election because they give candidates an opportunity to explain their plans to the public. A candidate may present ideas for improving education, creating jobs, developing infrastructure or addressing insecurity.

For voters, these promises can provide an opportunity to understand what different candidates claim they will do if elected.

However, a promise remains only a promise until there is evidence that it can be implemented. A politician may make impressive statements during a campaign but face difficulties when they eventually assume office.

This is why citizens may need to look beyond campaign speeches and slogans.

Why Track Record Matters

A politician's previous record can provide useful information about how that person has handled responsibility in the past.

For example, if someone has previously occupied a public position, citizens can examine the policies introduced, projects completed, decisions made and responsibilities handled during that period.

This does not mean that a person's past automatically determines their future performance. Circumstances can change, responsibilities can be different, and some policies require considerable time before their results become visible.

Nevertheless, a track record gives citizens something concrete to examine instead of relying entirely on campaign promises.

But What About New Politicians?

This is where the debate becomes more complicated.

What happens when a candidate has never held an important political office before?

Such a person may not have a significant political record for voters to examine. In that situation, citizens may have to pay greater attention to the candidate's ideas, experience, qualifications, understanding of public problems and proposed solutions.

A new politician should not necessarily be dismissed simply because they lack political experience. At the same time, voters may reasonably ask important questions about how the candidate intends to turn promises into practical action.

Should Voters Look at Both?

Perhaps the best approach is not to choose between promises and track record.

Both can provide useful information.

Promises tell citizens what a politician says they intend to accomplish, while a track record can provide evidence of how that person has handled previous responsibilities. Looking at both may give voters a broader basis for making their own decisions.

Citizens can also ask questions such as: What exactly is being promised? How will it be achieved? What resources will be required? Has the candidate demonstrated the ability to manage similar responsibilities before?

These questions can make political discussions more meaningful.

The Responsibility of Citizens

Political participation should not end with listening to campaign speeches or voting on election day. Citizens can also pay attention to public affairs, discuss policies, question decisions and demand accountability from elected officials.

Social media has also changed political discussions. While it can make information easier to access, citizens should be careful about accepting every political claim they see online. Checking information and considering different perspectives can help people form their own informed opinions.

The Big Question

Imagine you are choosing between two politicians.

One has made beautiful promises but has little proven record, while the other has a long political record but is making fewer exciting promises about the future.

Who would you pay more attention to—and why?

Do you think politicians should be judged mainly by what they promise, what they have already achieved, or a combination of both?
