THE GIRL WHO KNEW MY SECRET

Chapter 6: Daniel's Warning

Amara couldn't concentrate in class that morning.

Her mother's words kept going through her mind.

Some things are better left alone.

But Amara didn't want to leave anything alone anymore.

She wanted answers.

During break, she went outside and sat under a tree near the school building.

She took out her phone and opened the old picture again.

She stared at Zara and the boy standing beside her.

The boy's name suddenly came back to her.

Daniel.

She remembered him now.

He had been in her old school.

But why was he here?

“Amara.”

She quickly locked her phone and looked up.

Daniel was standing in front of her.

“What do you want?” she asked.

He looked around before sitting beside her.

“We need to talk.”

“About what?”

“About Zara.”

Amara frowned.

“What about her?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Stay away from her.”

Amara stared at him.

“Why?”

“Just stay away from her.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me what's going on.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I can't.”

Amara shook her head.

“Everyone keeps telling me to stay away from her, but nobody wants to tell me why.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because you don't remember everything.”

Amara became quiet.

“What am I supposed to remember?”

Daniel didn't answer.

He stood up.

“Please, Amara. Just trust me.”

“Why should I trust you?”

He paused.

“Because I was there.”

Amara's heart dropped.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at her for a few seconds.

“That night.”

Before Amara could ask anything else, he walked away.

Amara sat there, completely confused.

She wanted to follow him, but the school bell rang.

She slowly got up and returned to class.

When she entered, Zara was already sitting at her desk.

Zara looked at her.

“Where were you?”

“Outside.”

“With Daniel?”

Amara stopped.

“How did you know?”

Zara looked away.

“I saw you.”

Amara walked closer to her.

“What happened that night?”

Zara's face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”

Zara didn't say anything.

Amara waited.

Finally, Zara whispered, “You really don't remember?”

“No.”

Zara looked down at her hands.

“Then maybe it's better that way.”

Amara felt angry.

“No. It's not.”

Zara looked up.

“Amara, please.”

“Tell me the truth.”

Before Zara could answer, the teacher walked into the classroom.

Everyone quickly returned to their seats.

Amara sat down, but her mind was somewhere else.

Daniel knew something.

Zara knew something.

And her mother knew something too.

But nobody wanted to tell her.

After school, Amara walked toward the gate.

She saw Daniel standing across the road.

He was watching her.

She started walking toward him.

But before she could reach him, he turned around and left.

Amara stopped.

Then her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Another message from the unknown number.

“You asked the wrong person.”

Amara stared at the message.

A second message appeared.

“Daniel isn't the one you should be worried about.”

Amara looked up.

Across the road, Zara was standing there.

And she was staring directly at her.
