Have you ever noticed that the people around you can slowly influence the way you think, speak, and behave?
I believe they can.
Sometimes, we don't even notice it happening. You spend enough time around certain people, and before you know it, you start picking up their expressions, habits, attitudes, or even the way they see life. You may not have intentionally decided to become like them, but your environment can influence you little by little.
I have noticed this myself. The people we spend time with can affect us more than we realize.
Your environment matters
Think about it: if you constantly surround yourself with people who are hardworking, ambitious, disciplined, or eager to learn, their mindset can influence you. You may start thinking differently about your own goals. You may become more motivated to work on yourself because growth is normal in that environment.
The same thing can happen in the opposite direction.
If you're constantly surrounded by people who discourage growth, make fun of ambition, or have a negative attitude toward everything, staying motivated can become difficult.
This doesn't mean that everyone around you has to think exactly like you. It simply means you should be intentional about the kind of influence you allow into your life.
Social media is an environment too
And it's not only the people physically around us.
Social media is also an environment.
Every day, we consume videos, opinions, lifestyles, advice, jokes, arguments, and different people's ideas about what life should look like. After seeing certain things repeatedly, they can start affecting what we believe is normal or what we think we should be doing with our own lives.
That's why it's important to pay attention to what you're constantly consuming.
Ask yourself: Is what I'm watching helping me become who I want to be, or is it taking me further away from that person?
Growth can be difficult in the wrong environment
Can someone grow while remaining in an environment that constantly discourages them?
Yes, but it can take a lot.
Sometimes, you can be determined and still find yourself struggling because everything around you is working against the person you're trying to become.
That's why finding people who share similar values and goals can be helpful.
If you want to become wiser, spend time around people who value wisdom. If you want to become disciplined, surround yourself with people who take discipline seriously. If you want to learn, be around people who love learning.
The Bible says in Proverbs 13:20 that whoever walks with the wise will become wise. That verse shows how much our associations can matter.
Sometimes, you have to change your environment
Changing your environment doesn't always mean abandoning everyone around you.
Sometimes, it simply means adding new influences to your life.
Read better books. Follow people who teach you something useful. Have conversations with people who challenge you to think. Spend time with people who are becoming the kind of person you want to become.
Because sometimes, if you want to change your life, you have to change your environment.
You cannot always control everything around you, but you can become more intentional about what you allow to shape you.
Look around you. What is your environment teaching you? And more importantly, is it helping you become the person you want to be?
