What if I'm not behind

What if I'm not behind

What If I’m Not Behind?

Sometimes I look around and wonder…

Am I behind?

People my age are getting jobs.

Some are getting married.

Some are starting businesses.

Some are travelling, buying cars, moving into their own apartments, building careers, and seemingly figuring life out.

And then there’s me.

Still trying to figure some things out.

Still making plans.

Still starting over in some areas.

Still praying about things I thought would have happened by now.

And sometimes, if I’m being completely honest, it scares me.

Because social media makes it so easy to feel like everyone is moving forward except you.

You see someone's announcement and start questioning your own life.

"When will it be my turn?"

You celebrate people, but somewhere inside you’re wondering why your own story seems to be taking so long.

I've had moments where I've felt like I should be further than I am.

Like maybe I made the wrong decisions.

Like maybe I wasted too much time.

Like maybe everyone has figured out something that I haven't.

But lately, I've been asking myself a different question:

What if I'm not behind?

What if I'm simply on a different timeline?

What if the things I'm praying for are taking time because I'm still becoming the person who can handle them?

What if this season isn't a punishment or proof that I've failed?

What if it's preparation?

I’m learning that life isn't a race.

There isn't one particular age you're supposed to have everything figured out.

You don't have to have the perfect career at 23.

You don't have to be married because someone else your age is married.

You don't have to own a house, have a successful business, or have your entire future planned out just because someone online seems to have theirs together.

Sometimes we're comparing our behind the scenes to someone else's highlight reel.

And that's not fair to us.

I'm beginning to understand that some seasons are meant for building quietly.

For learning.

For making mistakes.

For trying again.

For discovering who you are.

For healing from things you don't always talk about.

For figuring out what you actually want instead of simply chasing what everyone else has.

Maybe I'm not behind.

Maybe I'm becoming.

Maybe I'm still laying foundations for a life I haven't seen yet.

And maybe one day I'll look back at this version of myself—the one who was worried about being behind—and realize she was actually right where she needed to be.

So if you're reading this and you feel like you're falling behind too, take a breath.

Your friend may be ahead of you in one area and behind you in another.

Someone may have the career you want but struggle with something you don't know about.

Someone may be married while you're single.

Someone may be financially comfortable while you're still trying to find your footing.

That doesn't make their journey better than yours.

Your life is not late simply because it doesn't look like someone else's.

I'm still figuring things out too.

But I'm learning to stop rushing my life just because someone else's seems to be moving faster.

Maybe I don't need to catch up.

Maybe I just need to keep going.

Maybe I'm not behind after all.

Maybe I'm exactly where I am supposed to be.

And for now, that's enough.
