I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH

I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH

The statement, “I will build My church,” was made by Jesus Christ in Matthew 16:18. He said, “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” This powerful declaration reveals that the Church belongs to Christ, and He Himself is the builder, foundation, and sustainer of His Church.

The Church is not merely a building made of blocks, cement, or beautiful decorations. The Church is the people who have believed in Jesus Christ, accepted Him as Lord and Saviour, and are committed to following Him. The Bible describes believers as the body of Christ. Paul wrote, “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27).

CHRIST IS THE BUILDER

Jesus did not say, “You will build My church.” He said, “I will build My church.” This shows that the work of building the Church ultimately belongs to Him. Human beings have important roles to play, but Christ is the chief builder.

Paul explained this truth when he said, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). Ministers may preach, teach, evangelize, disciple, and serve, but it is God who brings spiritual growth and adds people to His Church. Therefore, every Christian worker must depend on Christ rather than human strength, wisdom, or ability.

Christ Is the Foundation

A building is only as strong as its foundation. The Church has Jesus Christ as its foundation. Paul declared, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11).

The Church must therefore remain centered on Christ. Our preaching, worship, teaching, evangelism, and Christian living must point people to Him. When the Church moves away from Christ and begins to depend entirely on human traditions, personalities, wealth, or popularity, it loses its true foundation. Jesus is also described as the cornerstone of God's spiritual house (Ephesians 2:20). Everything in the Church must be built around Him.

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH

Although Christ is the builder, He has given His followers the responsibility of participating in the work. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus commanded His disciples to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

The Church has the responsibility to preach the gospel, make disciples, care for the needy, teach God's Word, and demonstrate the love of Christ to the world. Acts 2:42 shows the early Church devoting itself to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. Every believer has a role to play. Some preach, some teach, some give, some evangelize, and others serve in different ways. Together, these activities contribute to the growth of the Church.

THE CHURCH WILL PREVAIL

One of the most encouraging parts of Jesus' statement is the promise that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). This does not mean that the Church will never experience persecution, opposition, challenges, or difficulties. Throughout history, Christians have faced many trials. However, Christ has promised that opposition will not ultimately destroy His Church. The Church belongs to Him, and His power is greater than every force that stands against His purpose.

In conclusion, “I will build My church” is a declaration of Christ's ownership, authority, and power. It reminds us that the Church belongs to Jesus and that He is actively working to establish His kingdom through His people.

As believers, we should faithfully cooperate with Christ by living holy lives, preaching the gospel, making disciples, loving one another, and serving others. We should not become discouraged when we face difficulties because the builder of the Church is Jesus Christ Himself.

Let us therefore trust Him, obey His Word, and faithfully play our part in the great work He has begun. As Jesus said, “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
