Why does the feeling of being left behind hurt so much?
Is it because people do not try to carry you along?
No.
It is because no matter what you do,
they still will not look your way.
You reach farther than you ever thought you could,
stretching yourself thin
for even the smallest glance of recognition,
hoping that, for once,
they might truly see you.
Yet they do not.
And so your efforts fall like rain upon stone,
unnoticed,
unanswered,
leaving you to wonder
whether trying was ever worth it at all.
Making you regret ever looking their way,
ever placing your worth
in the hands of those
who never cared to hold it.
Acting as though they do not see you.
Acting as though they do not see you.
As if your presence is something easily overlooked,
as if your voice was never meant to be heard.
Making you feel invisible,
inferior,
unimportant.
Making you hide parts of yourself
to fit within the shape they expect.
Living in their shadow
for so long
that you begin to forget
what your own light looks like.
Making you feel as though
you are nothing without them.
Making you doubt yourself,
your abilities,
your capabilities,
your worth.
Making you feel small.
So small that even praise begins to sound like pity,
and every achievement feels undeserved.
Yet perhaps they were never breaking you.
Perhaps, without realizing it,
they were building something.
Something buried deep within you.
Something they recognized
before you did.
Something powerful.
Something they feared.
Not because it was cruel,
but because it could no longer be controlled.
And when it finally awakens,
when you rise beyond the version of yourself
they tried to confine,
they step back.
Not because you became dangerous,
but because you became undeniable.
And for the first time,
it is not you searching for their attention.
It is them realizing
they never truly understood
who stood before them all along.
