Letters to My Friend π€
18: When God Says No
Dear Friend,
Nobody really talks about this part.
The part where you prayed.
You believed.
You waited.
You tried to trust God with the outcome.
And somehow, the answer was still no.
Sometimes, God's silence hurts.
But sometimes, His answer is clear and it hurts even more.
A door closes.
A relationship ends.
The opportunity disappears.
The admission doesn't come.
The person you prayed would stay walks away.
The thing you begged God for goes to someone else.
And you're left sitting with a question you don't really know how to ask:
βLord, why not me?β
Maybe you've whispered that question more than once.
Maybe you've smiled around people while carrying the disappointment quietly.
Maybe you've told everyone, βIt's fine. God knows best,β while a small part of your heart was still grieving what you hoped would happen.
And honestly?
It's okay to grieve.
Faith doesn't mean pretending something didn't hurt.
I wish I could tell you that every βnoβ will make sense immediately.
It won't.
Some answers may take years to understand.
Some may never make complete sense from where we stand.
But I've learned something:
God's refusal is not the rejection of His love.
Even Jesus prayed in Gethsemane:
βNevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.β
β Luke 22:42 (KJV)
Jesus knew what He desired, yet He surrendered that desire to the Father without surrendering His trust in Him.
Maybe that's what faith sometimes looks like.
Not getting the answer you prayed for, but still choosing to believe in the One who answered.
Dear friend, perhaps the prayer you thought was unanswered was actually being answered differently.
Maybe the door closed because God saw something you couldn't.
Maybe what felt like rejection was protection.
Maybe the thing you called a loss was mercy wearing an unfamiliar face.
And maybe, just maybe, God was protecting a future you couldn't yet see.
But I won't tell you to simply βget over it.β
Some no's need to be grieved.
Cry if you need to.
Ask your questions.
Tell God you're disappointed.
Sit with Him in the confusion.
You don't have to hide your heart from the One who made it.
Just don't let a βnoβ convince you that God has stopped being good.
Because sometimes faith isn't believing that God will give you everything you want.
Sometimes faith is looking at the empty space where your answer was supposed to be and whispering,
βLord, I still trust You.β
Even here.
Even now.
Even when I don't understand.
Reflection πΏ
What is one βnoβ you're still struggling to understand, and what would it look like to trust God's heart even while you're grieving the answer?
Prayer π€
Lord, help me trust You when Your answer is not the one I hoped for. Give me grace to grieve without losing faith, to ask questions without walking away, and to believe that Your goodness has not changed. Teach me to surrender what I cannot control and rest in the truth that You see what I cannot see.
Amen.
