HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD

HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD

Hearing the voice of God is one of the most important experiences in the life of a Christian. God is not distant or silent. He desires to communicate with His children, guide them, correct them, encourage them, and reveal His will to them. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). This shows that hearing God is not only possible but also an important part of following Christ.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD?

Hearing the voice of God does not always mean hearing an audible voice with our physical ears. Most times, God speaks to us through His Word, the Holy Spirit, godly counsel, circumstances, and a deep conviction in our hearts.

The Bible says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

The primary and safest way to know God's voice is through Scripture. God will never speak to us in a way that contradicts His written Word.

WAYS GOD SPEAKS TO HIS CHILDREN

★ Through the Bible

The Bible is God's written Word and His most reliable means of communication with humanity. When we read Scripture prayerfully, God can use it to teach, correct, encourage, and direct us.

2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

★ Through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit helps believers understand God's will and recognize His direction. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would guide His followers into truth (John 16:13). Sometimes, the Holy Spirit places a strong conviction or instruction within our hearts. However, such impressions should always be tested against Scripture.

★ Through Prayer

Prayer is not only about talking to God; it is also about becoming quiet enough to listen. In prayer, we present our concerns to God and allow Him to direct our hearts.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

★ Through Godly Counsel

God can use mature and trustworthy believers to provide wisdom and direction. Proverbs 11:14 teaches that “in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

However, we should not blindly accept every piece of advice. Counsel should agree with God's Word and be carefully considered in prayer.

HOW CAN WE BECOME BETTER AT HEARING GOD?

★ We must develop a close relationship with Him.

Jesus said His sheep know His voice (John 10:27). The more time we spend studying Scripture, praying, and walking with God, the more familiar we become with His ways.

★ We must learn to be still.

A noisy and distracted heart can make it difficult to recognize God's direction. Spending quiet time with God helps us focus on Him.

★ We must obey what God has already revealed.

Hearing God is not useful if we refuse to obey Him. Jesus said, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17).

★ We must test what we believe we have heard.

First John 4:1 warns believers not to believe every spirit but to test them. God's voice will always agree with His character and His Word.

In conclusion, hearing the voice of God is a privilege available to every genuine follower of Christ. God wants to lead His people, but we must learn to listen. Through Scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and godly wisdom, we can grow in our ability to recognize His direction.

The goal is not simply to hear God's voice but to hear, understand, and obey Him. As we draw closer to God, our spiritual ears become more sensitive to His leading. Therefore, let us make time for God, study His Word, pray continually, remain attentive to the Holy Spirit, and obey what He reveals.
