How would one define marriage?
We need to refer to the Bible to perceive marriage in the same way that God does. The first understanding of marriage that we get from Scripture is that God created it as a one-flesh tie between a man and a woman. And He formed them as males and females, in His image, for one another (Genesis 1:27).
(Genesis 2:24) Hence, a man will abandon his father and mother, cleave to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
God made man and woman to be complete in marriage, with the lady acting as a "helper" for the man (Genesis 2:18). This alliance, which offers saintliness, children, and friendship, benefits us. Remember that "marriage" is never mentioned in Genesis 2. Marriage, according to Genesis, is a "one flesh" bond between a man and a woman. This is done because the Bible sees sexual complementarity as being crucial to the marriage relationship. Men and women are both sexual individuals, and every element of their being—their speech, thoughts, actions, attire, etc.—is shaped by their sexuality. —are influenced by this. Therefore, a man and a woman are married when they have a monogamous sexual relationship.
It ought to be obvious that marriage is based on sexual union, yet our modern church and secular culture are attempting to separate the two. The culture does it to legitimize its licentiousness, while the church does it to keep up its dualistic dislike for the physical world.
As a Covenant, Marriage
We must first understand that marriage is a covenant relationship with a covenant symbol in order to further develop this idea. What is a covenant, exactly? An oath confirms a dedication bond known as a covenant. A covenant is similar to a contract, but the pledge is made in God's presence, making it exclusively bound. Marriage's covenantal components are described in Genesis 2. Marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman that demands them to become one in every way, physically, spiritually, and relationally. We will soon discuss the sworn component.
In Malachi 2:14, marriage is clearly referred to as a covenant:
Yahweh bore witness to your marriage, and even if she is your covenant partner and wife, you have broken trust with the woman of your youth.
According to reports, the man is "unfaithful" to the "covenant" he made with his wife, a covenant to which God was "a witness." Proverbs 2:17 also states that an adulteress woman forgets "the covenant of her God" and abandons "the companion of her youth."
Marriage is thus a vow. [2] And every covenant has indicators, including the rainbow in the Noahic covenant, circumcision in the Abrahamic covenant, and baptism in the new covenant. What is the representation of the covenant in a wedding? You were right. It's about sex (not the wedding ring!). According to Genesis 2, "one flesh" serves as God's indication of a husband and wife's sexual relationship. If you ask them, most Christians will confirm that the Bible says that sex is the covenant sign of marriage. Because we consider sex to be "completing" a marriage, this is the case. Because vows alone are insufficient to establish a marriage, the church and state may annul a marriage between a couple who exchange them but never engage in sexual activity.
