Skinny-Shaming and the Invisible Struggle to Gain Weight

In a culture consumed by body optimisation, the narrative surrounding weight is almost entirely one-sided.

We are inundated with fitness challenges, diet plans, and weight-loss transformations.

The societal assumption is usually this: smaller is always better, and being slim is the ultimate destination. But this narrow focus ignores a frustrating reality experienced by millions.

Slim people struggle with their body image too, and for those desperately trying to gain weight, the journey can be just as emotionally exhausting.

While society validates the desire to lose weight, wanting to put on weight, or simply trying to keep it on, is often treated as a trivial non-issue.

Phrases like “I wish I had your problems” or “You need to eat junk food” are frequently thrown around as harmless banter. In reality, however, they are a form of body-shaming.

Unsolicited comments about someone looking “skinny,” “fragile,” or “like a breeze could blow you away” carry a subtle edge of judgment. They signal that a body is somehow incomplete, weak, or deficient.

The social and psychological impact of this dynamic is profound:

  • Clothing and Social fit: Standard clothing sizes often fail hyper-slender body types, making simple tasks like finding well-fitting attire a constant reminder of being out of proportion with societal standards.
  • Fitness Stereotypes: In gym environments, slim individuals, particularly men, face intense pressure to "bulk up." When progress is slow due to fast metabolisms or genetic factors, it can foster deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and weak physical identity.
  • Invalidated Feelings: Because thinness is culturally rewarded, slim individuals are often denied the space to express insecurity. Admitting to feeling uncomfortable in a thin body is frequently met with eye-rolls rather than empathy.

For many naturally slender people, gaining weight isn't as simple as just eating more calories.

Genetics, high metabolic rates, stress, and underlying health conditions play a massive role in how the body processes energy.

Telling someone with a fast metabolism to "just eat junk food" is as unhelpful and unscientific as telling someone trying to lose weight to "just stop eating."

Furthermore, healthy weight gain requires building lean muscle and consuming nutrient-dense calories, process that demands consistency, proper strength training, and time.

True body positivity cannot be selective. Empathy shouldn't depend on where someone sits on a scale.

Now, whether the goal is losing weight, gaining muscle, or simply accepting the body you are in, every individual’s physical journey is valid.

Moving forward, cultivating a more inclusive view of body positivity means acknowledging that body image struggles do not come in one uniform size.

Body image is deeply personal, rooted in an individual's internal experience rather than external societal privileges.

Recognising that a person can feel self-conscious or physically vulnerable in a slender frame is not a dismissal of the challenges faced by those carrying extra weight; rather, it is an exercise in basic human empathy.

By broadening our conversations to encompass all body types, we create a supportive environment where health, self-acceptance, and personal growth are prioritised over unrealistic aesthetic benchmarks.
