THE JOURNEY BEYOND THE RIVER
story

THE JOURNEY BEYOND THE RIVER

In a small village surrounded by green hills and tall trees, there lived a young man named Daniel. Since his childhood, Daniel was dreaming of travelling beyond his village. He thought that he would find a better life somewhere on the other side of the hills and the wide river.

However, one problem arose the river.

It was very broad, deep and hazardous, particularly during the rainy season. The villagers seldom went across as they were afraid of its strong currents. For Daniel, the river was more than just water. It was a symbol of fear, doubt and all that stood in his way to succeed in life.

One morning, Daniel decided that he would cross it.

His mother tried to dissuade him. “Daniel, the river is not safe, there are things there on the other side you don't know about.”

Daniel smiled gently. “Mother, I know, but if I don't cross it then I'll never know what's on the other side.”

Daniel was carrying a small bag on his back and he was walking towards the river. Upon his arrival he saw an old wooden canoe which was tied to a tree. The canoe was a bit damaged, but it seemed to have been strong enough to transport him across.

He launched the canoe and started to paddle.

Initially the journey was tranquil. The water was placid and Daniel was sure. However, halfway across the wind picked up in strength. The sky was overcast with black clouds, and the river started to flood.

Daniel became frightened.

He thought about turning back just for a second. But he recalled his dreams and the things he had been saying to his mother. He tightened his grip on the paddle and started to move forward.

A strong wave hit the canoe, almost knocking him over to the water. Daniel clung on for all he was worth.

“No, I am not going to surrender,” he whispered.

Eventually the storm subsided, after hours and hours of strong winds and heavy rain. The clouds parted, and sunshine streamed across the water. Daniel paddled on and on until the canoe landed on the other side.

He came out and glanced around.

On the other side of the river lay a pretty town with promise. There was education, agriculture, commerce and people pressing for their dreams. Daniel knew that this world was indeed larger than his dreams.

He remained there for several years, acquiring new skills and toiling. He went on to enjoy success. He, however, never forgot that he had come from a humble background.

Many years later Daniel was back in his village. He constructed a sturdy bridge across the river, so that no one would have to attempt it again.

The villagers crowded around him, happy to see him.

Daniel gazed at the river with a smile.

This river used to be standing in the way of my dreams I thought, he said. “Later I found out that the actual river was my fear.”

The villagers recalled Daniel's story from that day on.

They found out that some of the things that get in the way of them are not supposed to prevent them. They come to teach us courage, patience and determination.

Sometimes, though, the trip across the river is the trip that leads us to know who we are.
