Look up at the sky on a clear night. You may see the Moon, stars, and many tiny points of light. It is beautiful, but it also raises a big question:
How did all of this begin?
Our universe is filled with stars, planets, galaxies, and many other things. Scientists believe that the universe began about 13.8 billion years ago in a very hot, very dense state. The universe then expanded and continued changing into the huge universe we see today.
But this brings us to an even harder question.
What was there before the universe?
This is one of the biggest questions people have ever asked.
The problem is that the word “before” may not work in the way we think. Time itself is part of our universe. So if time began with the universe, asking what happened “before” it may be like asking what is north of the North Pole.
It is a strange idea, but it shows how difficult this question really is.
Scientists have different ideas about how the universe began. One popular idea is connected to the Big Bang. It does not mean that the universe exploded into empty space like a bomb. Instead, space itself began expanding from an extremely hot and dense early state.
As the universe expanded, it became cooler. Over a very long time, stars and galaxies formed. Later, planets appeared. Our Earth is one of those planets.
But what caused the beginning?
That is where the mystery becomes deeper.
Scientists are still studying this question. Some ideas suggest that our universe could have come from an earlier state. Other ideas suggest that there may have been many universes. There are also ideas that the universe could go through cycles of beginning, changing, and beginning again.
However, these are still ideas being studied. We do not yet have a clear answer.
There is another interesting question too.
If there was nothing before the universe, how could the universe begin?
This question has been discussed for a very long time. Scientists, philosophers, and religious thinkers have different views about it. Science can study what happened as far back as our evidence allows, but there are still parts of the story that we do not understand.
That is not a failure. It is one of the reasons science is so exciting.
Every time scientists discover something new about space, they get a better picture of our universe. Telescopes allow us to look at very distant galaxies. Space missions also help us learn more about planets, stars, and the early universe.
Still, one mystery remains.
What started it all?
Maybe one day, humans will discover an answer. Maybe we will find that the truth is completely different from what we imagine today.
For now, the question remains open.
When you look at the night sky, remember that you are not just looking at stars. You are looking at a story that began billions of years ago.
And somewhere inside that story is one of the greatest mysteries of all:
What was there before the universe?
We do not know yet.
And perhaps that is what makes the question so fascinating.
