People Tell You More When They're Not Trying To

Some of the most honest things people say don't sound serious at all.

They're hidden inside jokes.

A random comment.

A ridiculous argument about something that doesn't matter.

Sometimes, someone is laughing so much that they stop trying to sound a certain way, and you suddenly get a glimpse of the person underneath all the presentation.

I've started noticing that.

Especially in ordinary conversations.

You can ask someone a serious question and get the most carefully constructed answer in the world.

Then, five minutes later, you're both arguing about something completely stupid, and somehow you learn more about them than you did from the serious conversation.

How they react when you tease them.

Whether they can laugh at themselves.

Whether they immediately become defensive.

Whether they can admit when you've caught them.

Whether they know how to give the joke back.

Those little things tell you something.

Not everything.

But something.

I think we're all slightly different when we're trying to impress people.

We choose our words more carefully.

We think before we answer.

We want to appear intelligent.

Funny.

Mature.

Interesting.

Whatever version of ourselves we think will be most acceptable.

But give people enough comfort and eventually the performance starts to disappear.

The sentences become less rehearsed.

The reactions become quicker.

The jokes become more ridiculous.

And suddenly, you're seeing someone's natural personality instead of their carefully edited version.

I like those moments.

Not because they reveal some secret truth about a person.

I think that's another mistake we make, believing that one little interaction can tell us everything about somebody.

It can't.

People are too complicated for that.

But little moments can give you pieces.

And sometimes, the pieces are interesting.

You learn who takes a joke too seriously.

Who can laugh when they're the target.

Who always has a comeback ready.

Who pretends not to care but is actually very competitive.

Who says they don't do something and then immediately proves that they absolutely do.

It's funny how much personality can fit inside something as insignificant as a joke.

And I think there's something else I appreciate about these moments.

Nobody is trying to make them meaningful.

That's probably why they're meaningful.

There's no pressure to say the right thing.

Nobody is thinking, “Let me make sure this person understands what kind of person I am.”

They're just responding.

Laughing.

Teasing.

Being themselves.

And sometimes, that is when you actually get to know somebody.

Not during the carefully planned conversation.

Not during the serious explanation.

But somewhere in between the nonsense.

I've also learned that this works both ways.

If I'm comfortable enough with someone, I become less calculated too.

I say the random thing that enters my head.

I tease.

I laugh at myself.

I stop worrying about whether every sentence sounds perfect.

And there's a certain freedom in that.

Maybe that's why the best conversations aren't always the most intelligent ones.

Sometimes they're the ones where nobody is trying too hard.

You start with one topic.

Somehow end up somewhere completely unrelated.

Laugh at something that makes no sense.

Argue about something neither of you actually cares about.

And then, somewhere in all that nonsense, you realize:

"Oh. So this is what you're actually like."

Not the polished version.

Not the version trying to impress you.

Just the person.

And maybe that's one of the simplest ways to get to know people.

Pay attention when they're not trying to be known.

Because sometimes, people reveal themselves best...

when they think they're only joking.
