THE BOY WHO LEFT HOME

EPISODE 1 — THE HOUSE THAT NEVER FELT LIKE HOME

Daniel was only twelve when he began to understand that not every house was a home.

His father had remarried two years earlier after his mother passed away. At first, Daniel had been hopeful. He imagined that having a stepmother would mean having someone who would help him feel less lonely.

But everything changed after his father started spending most of his time away for work.

His stepmother, Mrs. Grace, treated Daniel differently from her own children. Her children had new clothes, good food, and everything they asked for. Daniel was expected to work around the house and remain quiet.

“Daniel!” she shouted one morning.

Daniel quickly came out of his small room.

“Yes, ma.”

“Why is the compound still dirty?”

“I cleaned it yesterday.”

“Did I ask you when you cleaned it?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“No, ma.”

“Then clean it again.”

Daniel picked up the broom.

He was tired, but he knew better than to argue.

Days became weeks. Weeks became months.

Daniel began doing chores before going to school and continued working when he returned. Sometimes, he would watch his classmates laughing together after school and wonder what it felt like to have a normal childhood.

His stepmother constantly reminded him that he was a burden.

“You should be grateful your father allows you to stay here,” she would say.

Daniel never answered.

He kept everything inside.

At school, his teachers noticed that he had changed. He used to be one of the most active students in his class, but now he barely spoke.

One afternoon, his mathematics teacher, Mr. Samuel, called him aside.

“Daniel, what is happening?”

“Nothing, sir.”

“You don’t look like someone who is okay.”

Daniel forced a smile.

“I am fine.”

Mr. Samuel studied him for a moment.

“Sometimes saying you are fine doesn’t make the problem disappear.”

Daniel looked away.

He wanted to tell someone. He wanted to explain everything happening at home.

But fear stopped him.

He was afraid nobody would believe him.

One evening, his father returned unexpectedly.

Daniel ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

His father smiled and hugged him.

“My boy! How are you?”

“I am fine.”

His father looked at him carefully.

“You look thinner.”

Daniel wanted to speak.

He wanted to say, Daddy, please don’t leave me here.

But before he could say anything, his stepmother walked into the room.

“Your son has been giving me problems,” she said.

Daniel immediately became silent.

His father frowned.

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked at his father.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Daniel whispered, “I’m sorry, Daddy.”

His father sighed.

“Just behave yourself.”

Those words broke something inside him.

That night, Daniel lay on his bed staring at the ceiling.

He realized something painful.

His father loved him, but his father didn’t understand what was happening.

And Daniel didn’t know how much longer he could stay.

Before falling asleep, he made a quiet promise to himself.

“One day, I will leave this house.”

He didn’t know where he would go.

He didn’t know how he would survive.

He didn’t know what his future would look like.

But somewhere deep inside him, a tiny voice whispered:
