I WISH I HAD LISTENED TO MY MOTHER

Other words we hear but don't pay attention to, and then suddenly we discover their significance and its importance was critical. Those words were spoken by my mother to me. She was very stern with me, but too many times I was too young, too stubborn, and I thought I had it all figured out. When I think of her words now, every day, I always have this one sentence in my mind that I wish I had followed my mother's advice.

My mother was my best teacher. She always reminded me to pay attention to my studies, be careful in making friends and never let pleasure destroy my future. I frequently heard her say, “My child, not all those who smile at you are smiling at you for your good. Be patient, be industrious, don't rush in because others are rushing in.”

I heard and didn't believe her.

I had a new step in my life and met people who seemed very interesting and successful. They were well dressed, spent money lavishly and were always having fun. They made me believe that studying will not help me to get something done and that life is about making money and getting it quick. I noticed the change in me and my mom warned me.

“They might be going in a different direction from you,” she said.

I became angry. I believed that she was not aware of the modern world. I said, "I am old enough to make my own choices. She remained silent but I could see her eyes were disappointed.

I didn't listen to her, I obeyed my friends. I failed to fulfil my duties and started to spend more time pursuing enjoyment than my future. In the beginning, it was all good. Lots of funny joke stories, and we laughed and went out and had a lot of fun. I felt like I'd found freedom!

Then everything changed.

My friends I trusted, they left me in the lurch. What I missed previously was gone. My education went downhill, my goals were starting to fall apart, and I was left in my own mess.

One night I came home and was devastated. My mom should have yelled at me, but she didn't. She was just looking at me, saying, “I told you that, because I love you.”

I really couldn't believe it, when she said that.

I realized that the first time for the first time that her advice was never intended to restrict me. She was trying to safeguard me from the errors she could see looming ahead. She had more experience, but I thought I knew everything because I was prideful of myself.

I said sorry to her with tears in my eyes. She pressed her lips against mine and said, “Don't say that it's too late to change.”

I learned one of the greatest lessons in life at that time wisdom is expressed softly, and often, at the mouth of those who love us.

I'm more mindful of my decisions and who is in my life these days. I listen to my mother's advice very well.

Only one thing I wish I did differently, if I could go back in time, I would listen.

That is because sometimes the voice we don't listen to today becomes the voice we need to listen to tomorrow.
