On the other side of the mirror; who are you?
When people are looking, it's easy to look good. We know how to take pictures, talk nicely in public, look nice and act nicely so that we get treated nicely. Our reputation is important to us and we take care of it. Then there's another question that we have to ask ourselves: Who are we when no one's watching?
One way to tell if someone is being rude is by seeing what they do when no one is looking.
It is exposed if you have a chance to cheat and you don't. It is revealed when you can take advantage of somebody who has not realized. It becomes apparent when you are left alone with your phone, your thoughts, your desires and your choices. It's shown by how you behave when no one's clapping, no one's giving you any money and no one's telling you how great you are.
In order to impress others, many people neglect to build themselves in private.
Life isn't just about looks, however. It's possible to deceive people for a while, but you can never deceive yourself. What you are in private is what you are in public.
Discipline when no one is there will become a part of you. If you practice dishonesty in secret, it can eventually become a habit. Self control of anger will make you more powerful in public. If you do something kind, but you don't seek it out, kindness is a part of you.
We live in a world that celebrates success, and there are many things that lead to success that happen silently.
But no one sees the hours that you spend learning. No one knows when you pray when you are down. No one is aware of the sacrifices you make to get better. You don't show anybody the moments that you feel like you're about to give up but you don't.You don't let anybody see the moments you are about to give up, but you don't.
After all, you're not living for the applause.
Applause is temporary. Character remains.
Describe what you do when no one is rewarding you. What do I do with people who I cannot benefit? What do I do when there are no consequences immediately? What thoughts do I have when no one is listening? What kind of person am I becoming in the secret places of my life?
The following questions might be awkward, but they are necessary.
Your private life is impacting your public life. What you do silently in your mind is training you for what will come out in the open.
So, don't just work on your image! Develop your character.
Don't only try to look successful. Become responsible. Don't only seek people's approval. Develop self respect. Don't only behave well when people are watching. Act in a right manner because it is right to act in that manner.
If you are a believer, also keep in mind that when you're not seen by anyone else, you're seen by God. Let this awareness lead you with a sincere spirit, not a frightened one to live wholeheartedly.
You could well find yourself creating something that the world will see one day.
Until then, keep on getting better.
The most important YOU is not the one that exists on social media, in the workplace, in school or among friends.
The most important you is the one who you become when no one else is around.
