One of the most amazing presents that can be bestowed upon someone is love. It can be a source of hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak, comfort to those who feel brokenhearted, and joy to those who feel forgotten. Loving words, affection, gifts, kindness, and companionship can be a way of showing love. But the best proof of a true love is sacrifice.
True Love is not just what we say, it's what we're willing to do. If you're successful and everything is going well, it's easy to say “I love you.” Real love is realised when things get difficult: when loving someone takes patience, forgiveness, time, effort, personal sacrifice. Love is tried both at good times and bad times.
Sacrifice is the act of giving something valuable to someone else. This can be giving time when you're pressed for time, helping another when you're tired, forgiving when you've been hurt, or putting another person's needs before your own comfort. True love is not always the question, “What is in it for me?” Rather, it poses the question, “How can I help? What can I do to help? What can I do to ease this person's pain?
Jesus Christ is the greatest example of sacrificial love. He spoke not just about love – He lived it and gave His life for it on the cross. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13) Christ's sacrifice reveals to us that true love will go to great lengths for the sake of others.
Sacrifice is also significant in our normal relationships. Marriage requires sacrifice. Friendship requires sacrifice. Family requires sacrifice. Sacrifice is necessary in the service of others. Sometimes we need to put up with things instead of being angry, forgive instead of revenge, understand instead of judging, and be kind instead of selfish.
Sacrificial love is not the giving of oneself in a way that allows others to mistreat or take advantage of him. It doesn't mean killing ourselves to please someone else. Wisdom, healthy boundaries and love must be at the forefront of true sacrifice. Sometimes the best gift you can give is to give, sometimes it's to say no, sometimes it's to correct, sometimes it's to face the consequences when they make a wrong choice.
The world has much to teach us on how to seek our own interests, how to protect our comforts, and how we can use others for our benefit. But true love is a teacher of something else. It reminds us to be caring, to give, to serve and to think of other people.
When love transcends words and becomes action, it becomes powerful. A helping hand, a listening ear, a sincere apology, an encouraging word, an act of kindness, these are the outpourings of love which will show more than beautiful promises ever could.
But love is not an audible proclamation; it is a faithful expression. Love is seen when the price is set and we pay for it for something good and meaningful.
True love is withheld nothing; it is willing to give, to serve, to forgive and to endure for the sake of another and the greatest expression of this is sacrifice.
