THE COLD WINTER ❄️ TWO
poem

THE COLD WINTER ❄️ TWO

THE COLD WINTER ❄️ TWO

In my hut, hungry

and desperate,

about to step out.

He stepped in,

unusually begging,

his hand covering my mouth,

telling me to keep quiet.

But he pulled me onto his knees as he did so,

his hand almost covering my entire face.

Shocked.

A man in my hut.

A dead warrior's daughter's hut.

How?

No man wants me.

Finally, the footsteps outside faded away,

but I was still in

an emotional shutdown.

Then I felt the cold metallic touch.

A knight.

How?

He let go of my face

and said he was running from warriors,

wandering through the woods,

when he was spotted by our soldiers.

I told him he could stay,

though I didn't know why.

"I have no food," I said.

"Nothing to offer in exchange."

So he handed me a small bag of gold

and thanked me.

I told him,

"Here, we trade horns and foodstuffs.

I hardly have any use for gold."

So, even with shaking hands,

I didn't take it.

I gave him clothes,

and they fit.

He reminded me

of my old man.

Then, suddenly,

he stepped out.

I waited.

I looked everywhere.

So I headed into the forest

and searched as best I could,

but with no luck.

And I asked myself,

Why am I searching?
